Kekana: We need to widen the gap

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana says they cannot be content with their number of Absa Premiership points at the moment, despite boasting a three-point lead.
Sundowns continue to sit atop the standings after eight consecutive rounds of fixtures, despite going down 3-1 to Orlando Pirates in a thrilling encounter over the weekend.
With 31 points from 17 games, The Brazilians are slightly below the championship threshold of two points per game, and Kekana admits they will need to widen the gap over the rest of the pack before their CAF Champions League campaign kicks off in March.
“We can’t be satisfied [with the number of points], but at the same time we can’t complain. We’re getting points and we just need to try and get more where we can,” said Kekana.
“Obviously, it’s not going to be easy now in the second round of the season. It will be a good thing to do [widen the gap before the Champions League starts].
“It will be nice to see ourselves leading the league with enough number of points. But, like I’ve said, it’s not going to be easy, everyone wants points and each point is very important.”
The 2016 Champions League champions will enter the tournament at the first-round stage, and will face the winners between Rwanda’s Rayon Sports and Burundi’s LLB Academic FC.
Kekana says, as players, they still hold a strong desire to compete on the continent and are itching to experience the thrill of lifting the crown once more.
“As players, we always want to do well, especially in all the matches we play, and the Champions League is one of our goals we’ve set,” he added.
“As players, we want to go there and try to win the trophy again. The last time we won it was a feeling of a lifetime, so we want to repeat that feeling, hopefully.”
Coach Pitso Mosimane has done considerable strengthening to his squad as they look to improve on their quarter-final exit last year, with the likes of Rivaldo Coetzee and Aubrey Ngoma set to be registered this year.
SuperSport United striker Jeremy Brockie's proposed move to Chloorkop is also being eagerly anticipated in time for CAF registration, which closes later today (Monday).
