Menzo focusing on the now

Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo says the club cannot look too far into the future ahead of a busy January, but is looking forward to the Christmas break.

The Urban Warriors pocketed four points from a possible six last week in Johannesburg, having held champions Bidvest Wits to a goalless draw before claiming a 1-0 win over Chippa United to lift them up to 13th in the Absa Premiership standings.

An away fixture to Kaizer Chiefs wraps up the year for the Cape club, who then face a busy start to the new year, with five games in the space of 26 days in January.

“We have to take it game by game,” Menzo said. “We have to think long-term, but at this moment we have to start with the next game, and then the next one and the next one – that’s the objective. Hopefully we’ll have some more points [after the weekend], and then the break to think about the next step.”

Ajax have a number of players making their way back from injury, with Morne Nel, Rheece Evans and Innocent Nemukondeni back on the field, while goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and midfielder Tercious Malepe could be ready for the last game of the year.

“We were away for nine days, so we hope to get Brandon and Tercious back after these two games. But I don’t want to rush and bring them back one day too early, only to lose them for weeks after that,” he said. “So we’ll take it from week to week, and day by day.”

Ajax are on the road for a fourth game in a row on Saturday, as they face off against Amakhosi at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
