Nthethe: Don't rule out Wits

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Thabo Nthethe says Bidvest Wits cannot be ruled out of the league title race just yet, even though the champions have made a terrible start to the season.

Wits, who held their nerve at the end of last season to beat Sundowns to the title, are currently second from bottom with just one win after seven matches. It’s been a horrible start for Gavin Hunt and his boys, but Nthethe is not reading too much into the Clever Boys’ form at the moment.

“You can’t rule them [Wits] out. Chiefs and Pirates have also not started so well, but we can’t rule them out. The season is long and it’s early to say they will not challenge for the title. Obviously it’s a nice feeling to have points as early as you can,” Nthethe tells KickOff.com.

Sundowns have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League and Nthethe believes this will give them an opportunity to focus more on reclaiming the league title from the Clever Boys.

Sundowns’ next league game is against Kaizer Chiefs on October 17.

“Most definitely. Now this is a chance for us to focus on the league and on cup matches. We have to put in everything we have to win the league. Last season we were almost there, but we did not win it. It gives us more time to work on the league and cup matches."

Nthethe would have loved for Sundowns to continue in the Champions League, a tournament the Chloorkop side has fallen in love with since coach Pitso Mosimane took over. But they will be back in the competition next year, in an effort to reclaim the title they relinquished this year.

“We always want to participate in every competition. It was not nice to get knocked out. We wanted to continue and defend our title,” he says.

"Last time we did well in the Champions League and we wanted to do well this season again. It’s not about having many games because I believe we have a squad good enough to play in the Champions League and in the league back home. We don’t struggle [with depth].”
