Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has complimented the strike partnership of Bernard Parker and Gustavo Paez after they put on a good show during the Carling Black Label Cup against Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Amakhosi beat Pirates 1-0 courtesy of a goal by Parker early in the first half after receiving a perfect pass from Paez, as the Glamour Boys claimed the bragging rights in the pre-season Soweto derby encounter.
Despite not scoring on the day, Paez was constant threat to the Bucs defence with his on-and-off the ball runs, which gave Parker more freedom to get into those good scoring areas.
Komphela said he is happy that his players now understand the Venezuelan striker and he wants Amakhosi to play to his strengths.
“From the preparations we had been trying the pair. I thought they came through nicely. One also has to point out at Parker's perfect performance and how he complemented Paez,” said Komphela.
“It is always nice to get two players get to understand how they have to relate and play because Parker would see Paez quite early enough and they slowly started to understand each other.”
”Paez said in his interviews that the team is starting to understand how he plays as an individual. Couple of the times he breaks the line and we never used to see him early but the game is the best teacher. Every loss is not a loss but it is a lesson. The lesson we learnt as we lost is that this guy can benefit us in this way and I thought they did very well,” he added.
Amakhosi also gave young striker Ryan Moon a chance to play in the Soweto Derby and he showed some flashes of brilliance, after some promising performances for Bafana Bafana recently.
“There is also Ryan who, if given a chance to play central, can give us something,” said Komphela.
