‘No Tower? No stress’

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says he’s not at all concerned by the absence of centre-back Erick Mathoho ahead of Amakhosi’s next league encounter on Saturday.

‘Tower’, who has started 13 of Chiefs’ 17 Absa Premiership games so far this season, picked up a fourth yellow card in the 2-1 win over Maritzburg United over the weekend, thus ruling him out of his side’s clash against Highlands Park through suspension.

Yet Komphela is not perturbed, insisting there is more than enough cover on the bench.

“We have to manage the team when one player is not available,” Komphela is quoted as saying on his club’s website. “When Tower is out, we have Siyanda Xulu and Daniel Cardoso waiting in the wings.”

Komphela then spoke of new signing Gustavo Paez, who has made two substitute appearances so far in the gold and black, and backed the striker to open his Amakhosi account soon.

“We are just waiting for Paez to open his goal account,” he said. “His movements and touches are solid and we are just waiting for him to score his first goal.”

Chiefs have now gone five matches unbeaten and are up to second in the league standings – albeit having played more games than a number of rivals – yet Komphela says he’s pleased with what he has seen.

“We just want to keep growing and growing,” he said, “and, growth is not only technical, it is also about confidence. All we want is to win every match.”

Chiefs will remain in Kwa-Zulu Natal, with their next two matches against Highlands Park and Ajax Cape Town scheduled for Moses Mabhida Stadium.
