Khune wins Chiefs the Cup Final

Posted: 1 December 2007 Time: 11:39 pm

Itumeleng Khune made three saves in a penalty shootout to win Kaizer Chiefs the Telkom Knockout Cup 3-2 on penalties after the sides were goalless after extra-time.

The match was one of high quality and was evenly contested. Both sides had some good scoring opportunities but were denied from scoring by some quality goalkeeping and narrow misses.

Sundowns came close early when Khune made a save from a Josta Dladla header in the third minute.

The best chance of the first half fell for Mabhuti Khenyeza in the 7th minute when he hammered a right-footed shot from outside the box towards the top corner only to be denied by a brilliant diving save from Brian Baloyi.

Lerato Chabangu hit his shot well wide from outside the box in the 26th minute.

In the 31st minute Surprise Moriri received the ball out side the box and turned past Cyril Nzama and hammered his shot well wide past the post, he should have done better.

Sundowns had a slight chance when Baloyi cleared the ball up field into the Chiefs’ goalmouth; Chabangu was just beaten to the ball by keeper Khune.

Esrom Nyandoro took a shot from a free kick that flew narrowly over the bar in the 40th minute.

The teams went in at the break with the scored tied at 0-0.

In the 49th minute Chabangu held the ball up inside the box and passed it back to Moriri, who’s snap-shot went narrowly past the upright.

Jorge Acuña took a shot that took a deflection and went past the upright for a corner in the 51st minute.

Mbulelo Mabizela’s long-range shot in the 59th minute was easily saved by Khune.

Chabangu received the ball and ran forward and from just outside the 18-yard area and took a shot that was easily saved by Khune. A bit later Baloyi made a save from a close-range shot by Khenyeza.

Chiefs nearly scored when a cross from Shaun Bartlett on the right was headed narrowly past the upright by Kaizer Motaung Junior in the 81st minute.

In the 91st minute Sundowns should have scored when a cross from Josta Dladla was headed wide by Peter Ndlovu from close-range.

The match ended goalless after 90 minutes and went into 30 minutes of extra time.

Benson Mhlongo headed well wide from a Dladla cross in the 92nd minute.

Sundowns came very close to scoring a minute later when a cross from Dladla on the right was volleyed narrowly past the upright by Chabangu.

In the 105th minute Baloyi made a brilliant diving save to deny Bartlett from scoring with a volley from inside the box.

Chiefs should have scored in the 108th minute when Bartlett gave a quality pass from the left to Siphiwe Tshabalala who hit his shot past the upright from right in front of goal, he should have scored.

Khune made an easy save from a long-range shot from Chabangu in the 115th minute.

The match ended goalless after extra-time and went to a penalty shootout.

Khune was the star for Chiefs saving three penalties, including an Ndlovu retake.

For Chiefs their penalties were scored by Onismor Bhasera, Cyril Nzama and Kaizer Jnr. while Khenyeza missed his penalty.

For Sundowns, Chabangu and Ngwenya scored their penalties while Khune saved the penalty kicks by Nyandoro, Ndlovu and Apataki.

That I am afraid does not win the Telkom Cup.
Amakhosi are simply Cup Kings of SA.
So Sundowns better shut their traps for good.

I see the game was much tactical, thus replacing Mhlongo with useless Apataki - Thanx 4 nothing Gordon. Please Mr Motsepe bring back Angel Cappa & appoint neil Tovey as his assistant

I must say Khune is brilliant ( too much was said about him being overexcited), the boy enjoys the game and I wish him well. As for Brian, phsychologically he is still a Chiefs boy (he knows he's @ sandawana 4 the moola. Tx to sundowns for the 4 million. WHAT WAS GORDON DOING SUBSTITUTING APATAKI FOR PENALTIES - I MEAN THE GUY WAS COLD that's why he missed............Love & Peace

Hi peace loving people
Amakhosi made me proud by walloping Sundowns in the cup.Their coach was boasting about 44 passes as if they are going walk all over us.Well no bonuses for them this christmas. They learnt the hard way that the biggest club in SA is KCFC.

Sundowns had a too defensive approach to the game, but Chiefs could not capitalise on that because they themselves are not that good going forward.

Gordon is a good coach (The best in SA) but he sometimes looses it.He was never going to win playing with no natural striker(This should be killing Lungisani Ndlela) and three defensive miedlefielders and then people wonder why SA has a strikers-crisis.

If Sundowns are serious about winning they need to buy a striker because everyone can see that Torielbar left a huge VOID on the team. They have a good squad but lack on strikers.

I dont see Chiefs winning many games with Kaizer on the bench (he is less busy than Khenyeza but will score more goals). What was Mushin thinking playing Khenyeza as a lone striker? but then again he has played Gerald Sibeko as striker!!

All in all ,It was not a bad game even though it did not leave up to my expectations.

It has been my observation for quite some time that Gordon has lost ideas. Those of you who understand football you will notice that Sundowns has been ordinary this season because the coach lacks vision. Even the substitutions becomes more of the same with no planB. I think its time Igesund leaves Sundowns before further embarassing us with losses against Santos and co. Trott Moloto should take over and bring some new game plan. on the final sundowns controlled the game but could not score the reason is lack of strikers whereas the solution ndlela sits on the bench. Motsepe pls release this man as he will continue to fail with his poor tactics.

LUKHANYO, i like your attitude. However, you should have donated to the needy teams not Chiefs. One wonders what were you doing in the finals then. This is about pride. We have enough revenue than you do. You think Motsepe is happy splashing money without any return. Come on. They say, dont hit a crocodile with sand. Im sure you would agree with me. You are talking history. There is enough trophies at Naturena, and this just add to it. What do you have? History tells me you need another 20 years to amass what we have. There are crisis at your Sundowns. Give it a day. the will be a meeting. Its not just money my friend, but honors. WHy do you think they had issues negotiating a new contract with Peter Ndlhovu? There is not return from him. That 4.25, you actually needed it more than we do. We generate enough income from gatetakings and merchandises as well as the sponsors we have. We may not be having as much cash as you guys have, but we have a vision capped with good planning. This chip chopping at Downs is not helping you people, because you want an instant success, and its not coming. Gordon is used to odrindary players, hence a problem with the big names. Apataki is not a player. He is fit to play for Bush Bucks. Im sure you know we are building the Amakhosi stadium. We have a vision, and we know it can never be instant. Keep giving us that 4 million since we are poor, and lets see where it takes you. You remind me of the careless son in the bible. Even is the money doesnt get finished, patience will run out, and there wont be any big signings anymore. Just like at Chelsea and Madrid. If you follow the international football, you will know the Madrid president is not looking at spending in January. The fights between Jose and Abramovich started when Jose was told there is no money for buying new players in one of the seasons. At Downs, you change coaches like potatoes, and everyone of them comes with his preferred players, and the whole situation keeps drifting to confusion, hence the Gordon trouble. It is not that he is not a good coach, the problem is that he is dumb enough to want to stick with the players he recommended himself. Changing him wont help. The next thing he is gonna tell you that he needs to reinforce the squad in January, while he already has enough material. Its a pity the president is failing to set the rules in terms of the limit in spending, hence he keeps firing them.

He was the best when it comes to penalties. He left, and Rowen took over and became the best in penalties. Rowen left, and now its Khune. Come on.That goalkeeper coach of ours is really the best. Amakhosi remain and will remain the undisputed CUP KINGS of SA football we have proof to back this, its not a fantasie we have earned this status. i agree sandawanaaa will need 37years to achieve that and to the Honurable Mr President Patrice Motsepe you must Befriend The General Chencha Guluva and you'll learn a thing or two about Football success, you don't buy it you earn it. i'm Proud of Itumeleng Khune, and Brian did prove that deep down he's a Khosi $ life. he just could'nt celebrate with us Cos the Honurable Mr President wouldn't pay his Bonuses this month, But he was happy.

You know anything can happen in that situation, and lady luck could have been at either side. You all know in your hearts you fear us, we're such a threat to your broken ego. Stop making too much noise, we are the Champions of much bigger title, last number if you may put it that way, the Premier League. I wont be surprised if you dont make it to top 8 again next year.
PS: I want to watch the penalty shoot-outs again tonight, particularly the second one kicked by Peter Ndlovu, and advice that you watch it as well.
