PSL Footballer of the Season Tefu Mashamaite is training with New York City FC in the United States with the view to a potential free transfer.
The former Kaizer Chiefs defender – who crowned an Absa Premiership and MTN8-winning season with the top individual honour as well as the Players’ Player of the Season award – has started a 10-day trial with the MLS club.
Mashamaite – who is now officially a free agent – was pictured training with Manchester City’s MLS franchise on Wednesday alongside Frank Lampard and David Villa, fuelling speculation that a deal could be close.
An independent Twitter account dedicated to covering the New York club stated on Wednesday night: “Confirmed: Tefu Mashamaite trained with NYCFC today. Another great free transfer for NYCFC if everything works out,” before later tweeting, “Breaking: Tefu Mashamaite is taking part in a 10-day trial with NYCFC.”
New York Sports Hub also reported: “A backline of Angelino – Shay Facey – Mashamaite – Andoni Iraola could give NYCFC a completely revamped defence and change their team completely … Mashamaite would be a strong addition for NYCFC.”
The 30-year-old, who has a degree in International Relations and Politics from the University of Witwatersrand, is also understood to be keen to further his studies in the States.
New York City are expected to announce the signing of Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo this week.
