Kaizer Chiefs are through to the Nedbank Cup last 16 after a comfortable 4-0 win against minnows Edu Sport at FNB Stadium.
The opening half saw the Amakhosi with the lion’s share of possession as Edu Sports opted to sit back in defence and get numbers behind the ball.
It worked for the large part as the minnows from the fourth-tier of South African football kept the Soweto Giants at bay with their well-organised defence.
Chances on goal were not prevalent and Chiefs only had their first decent effort in the 18th minute when Siphiwe Tshabalala met a left wing cross from Ovidy Karuru, but Bongani Dhladhla denied him from close range with a reflex save.
Seconds later the Amakhosi made their dominance pay off when Mthembu headed home a cross from Kgotso Moleko.
Chiefs continued to dominate matters after that, but poor passing and bad shooting saw them fail to extend their lead before the break
The second 45 saw a much more clinical Amakhosi side and they doubled their lead in the 63rd minute when Mthembu headed home a cross from Tshabalala.
Two substitutes combined for Chiefs’ third goal in the 84th minute when Katlego Mphela headed home a cross from Hendrick Ekstein, who had hit the crossbar with a rasping drive minutes earlier.
Mthembu grabbed his hat-trick in the 94th minute when he headed home a corner-kick from Tshabalala.
