‘Serero has more to offer’

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba says he is pleased with the way Thulani Serero played against Sudan on Saturday, but believes the playmaker can do more in future games.

The Ajax Amsterdam midfielder scored his first-ever official international goal for Bafana Bafana as they beat the Falcons of Jediane 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Equatorial Guinea.

And Mashaba had nothing but praise for the player when the coach was asked to comment on the Serero’s performance.

“For him to get the Man of the Match award means he played very well,” Mashaba says. “When he came out, Sudan’s right back and central defender were starting to push up. He was giving them a torrid time on the left.

“He played very well and I was happy. I will be happy if he’s got more to offer, but [based on] what he did [against Sudan], I was convinced.”

Meanwhile, Mashaba congratulated Reneilwe Letsholonyane for his 50th cap in the Bafana Bafana jersey. ‘Yeye’ came off the bench in the dying moments to replace Serero and Mashaba feels the Kaizer Chiefs midfielder still has a role to play in the national team.

“Yeye deserves it,” his coach said. “He has contributed and he is still contributing. He is amongst the top goal-scorers in our League and that tells you the kind of player he is.

“We would like to say congratulations to Yeye. He still has more time to play football, so he can increase that,” Mashaba concludes.

Thulani Serero was a jam... I was very happy for him because everyone was questioning his commitment but I only knew he had it in him to put up performances like that.

I did nit want him to be another Steven Peinaar who never really showed us his true potential in our national jersey. I hope and believe it is not gonna to be a one game affair. They need to give him license to run Nigeria ragged midweek.

I was one of the people against Furman captaincy. I take it back - looks like it could be a good one. It has given him more confidence and seems to have had some positive psychological effects on everyone. My apologies to football loving RSA

Serero did well considering that he had a slight injurt prior to game. He gav 110% effort and was brilliant to watch.

I think its not fair to single individual players whilst the entire team has done wonders but thats our media for you, asking Shakes stupid questions.

Yeye can retire now. For me i think he's a finished product. Bring back May Mahlangu pls Shakes.

The entire team did a wonderful job including technical team. Well done bra Shakes!

All i saw was a brilliant collective performance yesterday, Jali, Manyisa, Mlungu, Tower, Ngcongca Khumalo, Rantie, Serero, Rivaldo etc, what a great performance by the boys, only 2 players did not do well: Ndulula and his replacement Sekola. After yesterday's game i realized why Mashaba prefers Rantie over other strikers, Rantie was involved in both goals that were scored by Bafana, his strength and pace allows him to create great opportunities from absolutely nothing for himself as well as for his teammates, i'm starting to like him, if we can have a finisher like Parker or Majoro playing next to Rantie, we are likely to see more goals from this wonderful emerging Bafana machine.

I don't know how much I preached on this platform for the lad to be played through the middle,I feel vindicated.@signature,If I'm not mistaken,Called him a big player at club level only.what a playmaker he is.some of his passes didn't come off but that's because he's not scared to attempt the more difficult pass.My worry is andile jali,He's not the same jali that dominated Obi mikel and thlikes,Also the long balls that were played in the first half didn't help the players much

@Crap, your comparison is unfair my authi. Pienaar has always been committed n was fouled more than any other player cuz he was the onmy player we had. As for Serero, if you look at his movement n position, you wud realise that he drifted a lot to the centre which helped him a lot. He was always more adventurous whenever going inside. Pienaar was restricted, coached by clowns n surrounded by cows.
