Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba says he is pleased with the way Thulani Serero played against Sudan on Saturday, but believes the playmaker can do more in future games.
The Ajax Amsterdam midfielder scored his first-ever official international goal for Bafana Bafana as they beat the Falcons of Jediane 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Equatorial Guinea.
And Mashaba had nothing but praise for the player when the coach was asked to comment on the Serero’s performance.
“For him to get the Man of the Match award means he played very well,” Mashaba says. “When he came out, Sudan’s right back and central defender were starting to push up. He was giving them a torrid time on the left.
“He played very well and I was happy. I will be happy if he’s got more to offer, but [based on] what he did [against Sudan], I was convinced.”
Meanwhile, Mashaba congratulated Reneilwe Letsholonyane for his 50th cap in the Bafana Bafana jersey. ‘Yeye’ came off the bench in the dying moments to replace Serero and Mashaba feels the Kaizer Chiefs midfielder still has a role to play in the national team.
“Yeye deserves it,” his coach said. “He has contributed and he is still contributing. He is amongst the top goal-scorers in our League and that tells you the kind of player he is.
“We would like to say congratulations to Yeye. He still has more time to play football, so he can increase that,” Mashaba concludes.
