United win Vodacom Challenge

Posted: 26 July 2008 Time: 05:39 pm

Manchester United won the Vodacom Challenge on Saturday afternoon, after they beat Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 at Loftus Stadium.

Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley and Frazier Campbell scored for the Red Devils, who outclassed the Amakhosi.

The English Premiership and European champions were the better team from the offset, but it was Kaizer Chiefs who produced the first real chance of the game when Siphelele Mthembu slipped the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak, but Nemanja Vidic cleared the ball off the line.

Siphiwe Tshabalala then hit a free-kick just wide in the 39th minute after Darren Fletcher fouled Jose Torrealba just outside the area.

United took the lead a minute later when Giggs scored into the top corner from a cross by Lee Martin.

The visitors almost doubled their lead two minutes later when Michael Carrick sent his header straight at Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune, following a good cross by Giggs.

Rooney made no mistake in the 57th minute when he ran clear of the Amakhosi defence to run onto a superb ball by rightback Danny Simpson, before slipping the ball through the legs of Khune to make the score 2-0.

Chiefs found themselves 3-0 down five minutes later when Rooney knocked down a cross by Simpson, for Cleverley to slot home at the near post.

Chris Eagles should have made it 4-0 in the 69th minute when he latched onto a loose ball inside the area, but the midfielder produced a tame shot which Khune saved comfortably.

Substitute Campbell also wasted a chance in the 82nd minute when he rounded Khune, but the united striker slipped allowing the Chiefs defence to clear the danger.

However, Campbell did manage to get his name on the scoresheet four minutes later when he latched onto a loose ball inside the area following Eagles’ failure to control a long clearance by Simpson, to slot home with a low drive into the far corner.

Paul Scholes had the ball in the back of the net in the 88th minute, but his effort was ruled out for an infringement on Khune.

The match ended with Manchester United deserved 4-0 winners, with Kaizer Chiefs a shadow of the side that went down 1-0 to the Red Devils in the opening fixture of the Vodacom Challenge at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town last Saturday.

WOW. Everybody is right. This PSL soccer is the highest standard of soccer ever. I hate English Football because they like playing the "long ball". We showed them. Now all the Whites, Indians and the rest of the Cape Coloureds can see which is the superior football. The PSL games are going to be packed from now on. GO diski,GO shibobo's. I love it.

Good free soccer lesson. Chiefs were outstretched from the wings. Their midfield need some attention! Striking department - very thin!I don't see them dominating the PSL this season!

It should have been 10-0 to United. We saw exhibition soccer at loftus. Chiefs will struggle again next season. They rely heavily on OFF SIDE TRAP. I was a not surprised seeing goal coming like tornado because Charity begins at home. Chiefs should start first at African Champions league before dreaming of beating the Europeans champions. They have never and will never compete successfully in the Africans champions league because they don’t have what it takes to compete at that level.

Nice SHIBOBO goal from Rooney. Khune showed clearly that he cannot compete at international level. If he is still dreaming of representing Bafana at 2010 world cup, then he has a mountain to climb. He was beaten by soft goals and that shows a lack of international experience.

Makhosikazi fans should expect another tough season ahead. At the back, off side trap will cause them a fortune. In the midfield, they don’t have a destroyer and someone who can pass balls accurately to the strikers. Nengomasha is struggling and doesn’t have someone to replace him. In the striking department, they rely on one person (Torrealba) and league season is too long for one man.

It will be a tough season and teams must beef up their squads. The likes of Supersport United, Ajax Cape Town, Platinum Stars, Golden Arrows, Moroka Swallows etc will not be beaten easily and remember they are washing and analyzing chiefs strength and weaknesses. So expect another tough season makhosikazi.

I hear that Man U was watching the Sundowns/66 passes game last night, to figure out exactly how to humiliate Chiefs. Apparently they learnt that if you knock the ball around, you'll frustrate Chiefs because they like running with the ball AT 120 km/h like they are on a highway. Unfortunately Man U couldn't muster the 66 passes because it comes with a certain level of practice and skill. At least they made up for their disappointing attempt at 66 passes by scoring 4 goals. I like teams like Man U and Downs. Every time Chiefs gets cocky, they remind them very harshly that they are still very ordinary.

They never blasted him (Khune) today as they usually do which in turn gave him that undeserved fame. I appeal to all PSL players to emulate what happened today i.e. Just place the ball where he cannot reach and they'll relegate him to a third choice goalkeeper

What a great game! I think Chiefs should use this game to build a strong team this coming season. The loss is a signpost to success. I advise the Chiefs'management to strengthen the striking force.

I must say... m not a man u fan, but what they did ka chips kajeko was world class slaughter.

This must be said about chiefs, THE TEAM CANT GO FOWARD. EVERYTYM THEY GET A CHANCE TO GO FOWARD TORREALBA IS ALONE THERE OR THE "SO CALLED MIDFIELD PLAYERS" CANT PASS THE PASS DIRECTLY TO HIM.

I mean for god sake Scholes was on the pitch for 20min but, god- he made me enjoy soccer with his direct passing and the composure that he showed in there.

guys, kaiza chips has exposed themselves that they play kak football. at the moment they don't have a striker (torrealba and kaiza junior are injured, skalkwyk is fat and can't score). they think mthembu is gonna score goals for them, mushini wami u are lying to urself. manU u exposed them njengezinqa zesele... if they qualify to play in charity cup they ll be a team to laugh, they only rely on khune. this is stupid. i don't support amakhosikazi anymore

Outplayed outclassed outmatched outdone 'smitten and embarrassed use every word you can get but the fact of the matter is there is not so much difference. It’s about time our players stop holding too long on the ball. That is the only difference agree with me or not if you follow SA soccer is about tsamayas, shibobos and show me your number but that give the opposition side time to reorganize their defence. Lets encourage our players to play direct football don't applause a player showboating especially if your team is trailing. Come on guys grow up don't just watch footfall just for the sake of killing time while drinking some beers or smoking marijuana!

Hola Vuyani...A baba, I sorry to tell you this... eishh baba sorry. I asked for a 4 goal difference, you gave me a 3 goal difference. But don't worry I get what you saying. The PSL is the one of the top leagues in the world because they play "our brand of soccer". You see "our brand" is the best brand. it doesn't matter if we lose 10-1, 5-0 because we "have our brand" and that is all that is important.

Marlon, I can relate to your feelings about 'our brad of football' as you constantly point out sarcastically, but what can be done to improve the standard of our football? Do away with the showboating? Play direct 'kick-&-run' football? What happenned to 'great' SA soccer sides that played direct footbal in the PSL/NSL/NPSL before? Where are Manning Rangers, Arcadia, Lusitano, Durban City and Hellenic, etc? Some won the league once in a while but soon disappeared into oblivion.
My point is are our players suited to the alternative brands of football?
Finally, lets look for solutions and refrain from flogging dead horses...

Fafalaza you know what the solution is? I can give you the answer but I bet you tomorrow everybody will come on this site and say "no,our brand of soccer is the best". Our teams might win the African Champions league once in 10 years, Bafana will win the AFCON once in 20 years but to people "our brand of soccer is the best". Because you see "our brand" is the like the "brand of the Brazilians". But the Brazilians and other South Americans that play in the PSL dont even recognise "this brand". But we claim it's nearly the same. How Brazil manages to win the World Cup yet we cannot win the AFCON is a mystery. But that is the "brand that we play". Next week these defeats will be forgotten but "our brand will live forever".

Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the losers!!!

Eish, even though my beloved Khosi lost, I will still lift my head high 'caused I lost to the best. That 's the game of soccer, there are losers & winners and unfortunately for us we were losers. We felt what Man U supporters could have felt if and only if my beloved Khosi had won.

But, I was very humbled when my boys didn't rush for the exchange of jerseys, this proved that they were wounded. Now, we are only left with going back to the drawing board & plan for the Telkom Charity Cup because I know Khosi is already there, like it or not, even though the results are not yet out ...This like possibilities of ANC not winning the elections.
