Super Eagles take the Mandela Challenge

Posted: 14 August 2013 Time: 10:24 pm

Bafana Bafana were beaten 2-0 by the Super Eagles in the Nelson Mandela Challenge on Wednesday night.

Uche Nwofor came on for the second half and scored both goals for Nigeria, as Bafana suffered their sixth defeat in eight matches against the African champions.

Read: Bafana vs Nigeria AS IT HAPPENED!

Bafana and the Eagles both created their fair share of chances, but the visitors dominated overall, with Stephen Keshi’s shrewd second half substitutions tipping the balance.

For a gallery of the action, CLICK HERE!

Despite a slow start to the match, John Ogu had the first shot of the game on four minutes, from outside the box, but it was way high and wide.

Thuso Phala was yellow carded as early as the fifth minute, when he tried to take a free-kick to quickly. The set-piece was easily cleared by Nigeria.

Nigeria’s first real chance came from a ball over the top, which left centre-backs Mulomowandau Mathoho and Thabo Nthethe at sixes and sevens. Nnamdi Oduamadi got to the ball, but the threat was intercepted by Itumeleng Khune.

The Super Eagles had another half chance on 16 minutes. The ball was swept out wide to Sunday Mba, who spun it back in from the left to Elderson Echiejile in the penalty area, who goes for an acrobatic volley that went over the bar.

Shortly after, Dean Furman collected the ball just outside the box and Bafana went on the counter. Bernard Parker sent the ball through to Tokelo Rantie, who made a strong run but could not beat Efe Ambrose and the ball went out for a corner.

On 24 minutes, Furman again collected the ball in the middle and scooped it out to Parker, who got behind the Nigeria defence and looked to combine with Siphiwe Tshabalala, but the ball was just in front of him.

On half an hour Nigeria came close, when Ogu hit a curler, which thumped the top corner post with Khune stranded.

A few minutes later Reneilwe Letsholonyane found Rantie outside the box, who burst through the Nigeria defence on a solo run and had a shot, but it was straight at Austin Ejide.

Nigeria went on the offensive in the next few minutes, with Obinna Nsofor and Ogu on target, but Khune dealt with the chances – the second in unconventional style, with his chin.

Rantie then hit the side netting, after making space for himself in the box, before Letsholonyane hit the ball straight against Godfrey Oboabona after a pass from Rantie.

Nigeria made three changes at the start of the second half, bringing on Victor Moses for Mba, Ahmed Musa for Nsofor and Nwofor for Shola Ameobi.

Parker forced a good save from Ejide at the start of the second half with a free-kick, and the Eagles captain managed to parry Nthethe's effort off the rebound.

Four minutes later Nwofor made it 1-0, scoring with a cheeky backheel after a cutback from Oduamadi, after some great play by Moses on the left to hold off Phala and skip past a couple of Bafana tackles.

Letsholonyane was set up by Luyolo Nomandela a few minutes later, but he sent his shot over the crossbar.

Nwofor made it 2-0 in the 68th minute with a one-touch goal after some great play by the Super Eagles. Moses skipped past his marker and played in Musa, who cut back to an unmarked Nwofor for a simple tap-in.

Igesund brought on Lerato Chabangu for Letsholonyane on 75 minutes, and he immediately took a shot at goal from outside the box after spotting Ejide off his line, but the ball was just over the bar.

10 minutes from time, Parker came close with a free-kick that beat the wall, but went just over the crossbar.

In injury time, ‘Shabba’ came close, after twisting past a couple of Nigeria defenders, but his shot was saved.

Shortly after, substitute Lebogang Manyama hit a last-gasp low shot on target, but it was inches wide.

South Africa: Khune, Masilela, Nthethe, Mathoho, Hlatshwayo, Letsholonyane (Chabangu 72), Furman, Tshabalala, Parker (Manyama 80), Phala (Nomandela 60), Rantie

Nigeria: Ejide, Oboabona, Echiejile, Ogu, Ambrose, Egwuekwe (Okwuosa 77), Ameobi (Nwofor 46), Oduamadi (Ideye 78), Onazi, Nsofor (Musa 46), Mba (Moses 46)

Nigeria is Superior to South Africa in Football at every level. Bafana Bafana should understand that by now.

It was possible for Bafana to win, but it was a very very slim posibility.

I think it's high time these two just focus on Chiefs only. The defence let Khune down. Phala and Rantie should be excluded in the team for the time being since I really don't see their contributions.

Sorry Bafana but the trick is very simple if you want to match the likes of Naija get your players to Europe and refrain from thinking that PSL is the best, in reality you wont win anything if most of the players come PSL, don't look for the best 5 leagues in the world being England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy, Scandinavian leagues can still help Bafana to perform where there is no much stiff competition for players, the way SA players are returning from Europe should be a concern for SAFA not to be exited that they are going to improve PSL while they have failed in Europe this does not help Bafana either

1. Send young players(aged 16-19) to Europe and keep them there so they can get experience and play good football.

2. Get a new coach and start out fresh with 2,3 or even 4 experienced players and blend them in with inexperienced young players.

Chies were so patriotic by releasing their players to play in Nelson Mandela cup ,and they played with caution not to get injured because they are still have play competitive games and to defend the league as their are Champions of the league,no coach wants tosee his player injured because whenever he plans,he plans around that player .
Pierats supporters are just making lousy loud noise for nothing all they wish is that Chiefs players must be injured of which it will never go according their wishes.

Nwofor deserved another call-up! Keshi must give this guy a chance.

Now to Ameobi and Nsofor: I think they had their chances and couldnt use it. But still want a old guy like Ameobi on our bench just in case. Its worth Millions to have such an experience player for 5min or so.. Lets wait after the Malawi match first. I think Keshi will have to make some hard choices this year.

This is why I think Keshi will have some problems:

- Eneramo will play a good season in my opinion. Besiktas didnt spent so much money just for fun. Plus Eneramo is in a good age right now, not too young not too old

- Kalu Uche will also play a good season I have the feeling

- Ike Uche will also have something to say

- Aluko just came back from Injury... This boy is a huge talent

- Ezekiel....

- Anichebe will play a good season for Everton. I hope so atleast

- Ighalo O..... lets wait and see

- Ujah started the season really good...

Hmmm we have too many strikers. I think guys like Musa, Emenike and Moses will mos def be in Brazil if we qualify, but Ideye Brown must do much much more this season. I think alot of Ideye, I think he is a very good striker but must prove it once more

I really cannot believe people expected Bafunny to beat The Super Eagles.

Just look at their respective star players:

Simphiwe Tshabalala vs Victor Moses.

Victor Moses:
Plays for Chelsea (EPL, England). Club coach is Jose Mourinho who has won 2 Uefa Champions League medals with 2 different clubs, Uefa Cup, League titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, and every FA cup in those respective leagues.

Simphiwe Tshabalala is still playing for Chiefs (PSL, RSA) after failing in England's 2nd division twice at Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. His coach is Stuart Baxter, who, according to his CV, has won everything Jose Mourinho won and more.

I arrest my case.

Please tell me that this isn't the best you guys got. Even without Enyeama, Mikel, Emenike, and Omeruo we still won. We practically put our Team B on the first half, only when we injected Moses, Musa, and Nwofor did we score. I suggest you do what Nigeria did

1. Send young players(aged 16-19) to Europe and keep them there so they can get experience and play good football.

2. Get a new coach and start out fresh with 2,3 or even 4 experienced players and blend them in with inexperienced young players.
_________________________

My brother from another mother in other country, that was not the best we have. South Africa has a team leading Group A in the CAF Champions League which you probably are aware of, Orlando Pirates. 95% of its players are South African, and none of them featured in the match against your beloved Nigeria. In fact, none of those players ever make it to the starting line up of Bafana, and only the coach, Gordon Igusend knows why.

This team, Orlando Pirates is already doing what you suggested, that we should send teenagers to Europe. Pirates has recently sent Nhlakanipho Ntuli to FC Twente where we expect him to be groomed into a world class player.

I also agree with you that the coach of the national team, Gordon Igusend must be fired. He is clueless hey. No imagination whatsoever.

Uche brothers, Anichebe, Aluko, Apam, Ezekiel Imoh and perhaps Enaremo will do this team a world of good. But, Keshi is afraid of overhauling players like Ideye and Sunday Mba which will definitely happen if these guys are injected into the team.

We wait and see.

I would like to agree with the bloggers that say the coach is not the problem. I was also born a Pirate but I believe even if G.I fielded our best galaxy Bafana would still perform poorly. The problem is really bigger than this.We simply do not have the players that have sucess in foreign legues, especially Europe.Compare our best Bafana 11 with the B-team of Nigeria what do you get?Mind you Im not even talking about their best team. Then look back at how many youth international competions our national youth teams have competed in?How can the senior team do well when our youth structures are shambles like that?Let us not make this a Pirate/Chiefs or coach issue.SAFA has failed the nation. It is true that all they are good for is organising tournermants and fighting for positions.I tell you if we fix the problem at grassroots level we will produce players who will be good enough to go to good europian leagues whilst they are still in their teens, where they will be taught the proper way of playing football.I have nothing against our league,it good and competetive but I think we can all see that whatever we currently doing is just not working. This is no longer the 90's,we need to move with the times and follow proven methods that other top footballing nations are using.

I find it amusing that Pirates fans actually believe the presence of their players was going to make a difference. u talk as if u average 4 goals per game when its common knowledge u fail with flying colours in the opposition half hence why u signed 3 strikers this season (erasmus,Bacela and sum dude from arrows ).no wonder manyisa loves backpassing so much cos he knows its not like myeni nd klate will do anything constructive. if u are so awesome why lose 1-0 to amazulu? Why defeat a dehydrated and starving team (al ahly)? Chiefs scored more goals than any team last season penetrating opposition defenders atleast 20 tymes a match. the only thing u guys are good at is defending just to keep scorelines respectable like losing 1-0 or 2-1.

Those who are blaming the standard of the league must re-think again. We all know what Shakes Mashaba achieved with both BB and Amagluglug.

We all saw what South Korea achieved in Korea Japan with most of their players playing locally. We also saw Ghana under 20 taking the world by storm and we all saw Santos of Brasil making it to club world cup. Pirates under 12-17 always win Man U competitions and we saw Serame Leswako competing with local boys in the FIFA under 20 WC.

Now this brings me to my next argument - leadership from a coaching point of view. Gordon lacks the necessary ingredient needed at this level. Look at Keshi, a man who drops key players because its against principle. He is not liked in Nigeria but he is bringing change and results.

Gordon is not the man for the job, he is scared to take risk and bring in change. I have preaching this gospel since 2008. The media is not helping either.

Itu Khune has always let the nation down on several occasions but he is stil number 1.

I think it's high time these two just focus on Chiefs only. The defence let Khune down. Phala and Rantie should be excluded in the team for the time being since I really don't see their contributions.

In the national team, its about a system that works and a leader that understands it, not the players hence Keshi is able to bring any player and they fit in.

So Gordon focuses too much on personel instead of re-storing our way of play, lets work with what come naturally to us. Look at Mandla Masango at the under 20 playing his natural game and look at him at Chiefs, the boy is average at Chiefs but excels in the international platform.

Gordon does n't even have a method or a formula like Baxter Root 1 bazobona, RDS tiki taka kamina kawena, Hunt - direct and physical, Mqhithi - flair and rotation.

In Gordon we dont have a coach but a motivational speaker who must go to schools and motivate kids about HIV and life skills.

Mina i prefer the passing game that roger is implimenting @ pirates rather than players running aimlessly with the ball coz once he is closed down that put defence under pressure especially if your fullbacks overlap. Thats why i think tlou and myeni are failing us @ pirates so is shabba @ bafana.

Is really not about Sundowns, Chiefs or Pirates, Gordon must select a team that will be made-up of all other PSL teams including Overseas based best players, he should not only focus on the so called big teams. National team should be made up more than 10 PSL teams so as to encourage national support and not team support. In reality; it will be ignorant of you to expect a die-hard Pirates fan to support a team that does not represent his/ her team.........at the moment a national team is not ours but it belongs to a certain team and up until we rectify that, we will continuously be critical in our analysis when addressing issues of national team. If Bafana can be represented by all other PSL teams, each team supporters will want to go to the game to support the players from their team, and the stadium will get full.
Solution: Let us have a maximum quota of 3 best players from each PSL team to encourage nation building and national support.

Exporting players to Europe or IMPORTING world best players is the solution, which I think the latter is out of reach economically!!!!

GI's tactics also leaves much to be desired, why Phala, why opt for 2 similar striker who u hardly find on the box, what was Hlatswayo doing in the right back when u have natural left backs like van Heerden in the team. GI you suck, SAFA must fire you PERIOD

After beating Bafana 2-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi told Goal that he expected the victory

Although the African champions Nigeria started at a slow pace, stepping up in the second half, Keshi told Goal that he knew they would beat South Africa.

“The win was not a surprise to us at all. I knew that my boys were going to win from the start, and so I was not surprised by the result," said Keshi.

Read more on: Igesund happy with Bafana despite defeat

Despite his confidence, the coach also reminded us that he respects South African players, but feels that there is a long road ahead for Bafana Bafana to improve.

“They (Bafana) were a good side, but I feel that they can still improve on their standards,” said Keshi.

The Nigerian said the Nelson Mandela Challenge was about giving his players a chance to practice with each other.

“Our main goal is to play well against Malawi, and that is what we are worried about more than anything. The Bafana game was good, but it did not really challenge us that much,” he said.

So to some this up, Our national team has been on the decline after winning the 1996 cup. So Stop pointing fingers.

We have reached a situation where even coaches are the ones who are complaining about our players but funny thing about that is dat dey are not doing anything about it....

I really think we need a coach who is going to tell SAFA and South Africans that he has got a 5 or 10 years plan and start from scratch......

What's de use of qualifying for every continental and world tournaments if we are going there just to add numbers.....we really need to tackle at this thing with a plan; cause for now we are gunning for results with tried and tested but still fail players........when was the last time south africa A-TEAM CALL up a young player who is doing for the under-23.....We can qualify for 2014 WC but I can bet you now dat we will be knocked out in the group stages......

LET'S ALL FACE REALITY AND COME TO OUR SENSES THAT WE JUST DON'T HAVE WORLD BEATERS IN TERMS OF PLAYERS.....WE EVEN TRIED SOME OF THE BEST COACHES BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXIST......

We have players in South Africa. What we do not have is a fair selection. We also do not have a true coach that will select a fair team based on individual strengths of players. The psl is also producing a lot of mediocre performance. The players do not treat football as a profession. We cannot continue to play same players who are failures. We need a total change. Bafana remains a poor sporting team not only in Africa, but in Southern Africa as well. And we think we can play Nigeria, Burkina Faso, pls. Running aimlessly will never produce SA brand of football. We need proper organization in all departments, necessary aggression and good decision making in all departments. This has nothing to do with playing overseas. It has something to do with teams doing a good job on their players, not this joke of favoritism.

1. Pirates fans are hurting that BB, our national team, is forever going down. We dont care who the coach selects, but want to see BB winning unlike those who are happy that the coach hasnt selected players from so-n-so team, while they dont care of the results and the picture that they reflect of BB to the world

2. The basis of national team selection is the individual`s deemed potential, not team`s success hence Gaxa isnt selected despite him being a champion, but Hlatshwayo was selected instead while his team narrowly escaped relegation. Tortoises were not champions in 2011 and 2012 , but their players were selected to BB, why dont you ask yourself why prior making noise about being champions?

3. Wrong, they always select players they feel have potential to play international football

4. Wrong again, as if that was the case Sangweni [Pirates player] wouldnt be a BB topgoalscorer in the recent AFCON in the presence of the strikers like Parker, Majoro, etc

5. Yes you are, and such didnt help me [a BB fan] to win against Nigeria, thus is irrelevant to my national team

6. Most succesfull club in the country in terms of what? number of domestic cups or number of international club cups? We talk international football here, not domestic football

7. BB has lost and you say we[South Africans] are jealous. No we are not jealous but sad that our national team has yet again lost, meanwhile you are busy telling us that your team is the most successful team in the country, are champions, only their players should be at BB. While we[concerned and sad South Africans] are worried about our national team loss and continued deterioration , you are busy gloating about your team, as if such has and is helping our national team

When Moses, Musa and Nwofor came in, you could see the Super Eagles lift their game. The confidence Moses plays with is lovely to see, but he must continue to improve on his decision making. If Eshi is truly thinking of playing Moses in Attacking midfield, then Mba is in trouble.

You could also see the love among the players from the way Musa celebrated with Nwofor. This team can really improve when Joel Obi and Anichebe return. Keshi forget what Obuh did, invite Imoh Ezekiel yourself, he will not turn you down. The competition among young men can only make the team better. Congrats to the Super Eagles and Keshi

I heard we lost the match. I did not watch it...Let me tell you why we lost the match so easily (although I did not watch). The men who were put on the field were not good enough to beat Nigeria. I am only going to name some of the players who should not have been fielded at all. Players like Hlatshwayo and Nthethe are not good enough to compete with strong and fast players like Nigerian players. Hlatshwayo does not even deserve a call-up at all based on his performances at club level. I have seen a lot of opponent players dribble passing him many times, and the only way for him to stop them is to foul them (sometimes in the dangerous zone-18-yard area).

Now the questions I have for Gordon is: why do you field let alone give a call-up to an bad player when there are good players (e.g. Tefu Mashamaite) to give attention to? Are you playing or giving call-ups to certain players for the sake of representing their respective teams at national level? If indeed, their selection is solely based on that, then you (Gordon) are not going to achieve anything. This also raises a question: Is senior national team coaching job bigger than you? There is no doubt in the minds of many South African football lovers that Tefu Mashamaite is better than both Nthethe and Hlatshwayo. Just because he was never called-up for national duty by the previously failed coaches does not mean he is not good either. Nthethe, on the other hand, is too weak to equally compete against aggressive players. He is so slow, and that is why Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns have not even considered signing him. You excluded Tefu because you thought you had called-up many Kaizer Chiefs players.

Gordon, if you are not careful, you will be out of job sooner than expected. The inclusion of Phala, to me does not make sense at all. Although the boy, shows to have a lot of energy, but he does not (and he will never) use it wisely. He runs like a headless chicken all the time. But for some reason we don't know, you keep fielding him. Why don't you give someone like Mathebula instead a run to see how he turns out at national level, since he had already proven himself at club level. I really wonder if Gordon has an assistant, and if he has, I wonder if Gordon listens to him.

Lastly, congratulations to Nigeria on your victory against our weak Bafana Bafana. You caught us off guard. Many of our trusted players were not ready to compete due to injuries and stuff. I wish they were there, and I am telling you right now that we would have performed differently. I know you, on the other hand, did not have some of your best players, but I still say if all of our trusted/best players were present, and you, on the other hand, had all of your best players, you would not have defeated us by not more than one goal. In fact, we would have defeated you. I hope the next time we meet, all of our players would be ready then... Congratulations once again, and if you manage to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, please go and compete to win matches...and even the world cup itself. I world be glad....Anything is possible...
