SABC shift Generations for Bafana!

Posted: 14 August 2013 Time: 02:58 pm

The SABC has confirmed to KickOff.com that the Bafana Bafana match this evening will be shown live.

Bafana take on the Super Eagles in the Nelson Mandela Challenge at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 8.15pm tonight – and the action will be live on SABC 1.

The national broadcaster has a rocky relationship with soccer fans, after unexplained blackouts for a number of big matches in the past.

Most recently, Bafana's opening Cosafa Cup match against Namibia was scheduled to be broadcast live on SABC 1, but as kick off approached fans realised the match would not be shown, with no official word as to why ever forthcoming.

Today's match is scheduled on the SABC's online TV guide to start at 8.15pm (not delayed live), but KickOff.com decided to call to confirm.

According to SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, popular soap opera Generations has been bumped forward to accommodate the national football team.

"Yes, the game will be shown," Kganyago says. "Generations has been moved to 7.30pm to allow the game to start at 8.15pm."

The match will be on SABC 1.

Generations @ 7:30....this is insane. SABC should have let generations play in its time slot. Bafana fans should then watch only the second half of the game. Generations at 7:30 will be competing with Izidingo on SABC 3, and many poeple will watch the latter if you consider that generations female characters arent better looking than those of Izidingo.

but Generations attract more fans as compared to BB because many poeple would rather watch Akhona than standing the torture of Yeyes looks.

SABC is trying to deliver, their only problem is that they are too generous. for example; They gave broadcasters in DRC the go ahead to televise the Mazembe-Bucs game without having to fork-out cash in return for the same favor in the return leg. come the return leg, the poeple in DRC game SABC the middle finger. This was also the issue when SABC was to broadcast a game involving BB and another African country (forgot its name) and instead of watching the game...a France based company decided not to give SABC the feed.

SABC must revise their negotiations strategy. They should avoid using the barter system, ie. exchange of service for service. They must use the money which is more reliable than paper or mutual contracts.

One must acknowledge Hlaudi Motsweneng's effort at SABC, unlike that blubber kaiser Kganyago who once brazenly told football fans that they cant temper with generations bacause that's revenue generation for them. This proves his lack of insight, where is that revenue-generation now ? He despised soccer fans by saying that they (SABC) are not about football but they sign contracts with the PSL for exclusive broadcast rights.

The issue here is not about the number of channels...it is about the broadcasting rights. Not long ago, SABC televised Pirates-Al Ahly 3-0 encounter on SABC 3 and Sundowns was live on SABC 1. during the world cup, the SABC televised all the encounters because they ddnt have an issue with the holders of the broadcasting rights (assuming SABC were not the holders).

Even if SABC can increase the number of channels, they still have to obtain broadcasting rights to televise games. PSL broadcasting rights are with DSTV, hence SABC always show small teams. SABC needs to revise their negotiation strategy

Kaizer Kganyago was right, generatios is a source of revenue to SABC, and it is a reliable one. many poeple will prefer to watch generations rather than BB if you consider how poor BB is performing. however, in this case, BB can attract a huge number of fans, even those who doesnt follow soccer might watch the game because the game is played in honour of TATA.

Ngiyakuzwa Bhakaniya ,

Possibly is about time they also protect their credibility to the South Africans, they’ve let us down several times .
I can see that they’re trying to revive that , not that nonsense of prioritising GENERATIONS over our national team. About the DRC and that Sierra Leone games unfortunately some of the things are further than our control , however we’ve been embarrassed numerous times in the country, due to ignorance and incompetency .

In your response you also mentioned (negotiations strategy)….mmnnhhhh after our untimely 2secs celebration, jumping up and down that ‘’fake qualifying’’ by Bafana Bafana, then realise later that we actually didn’t to pick up rules and principles of qualify for AFCON and also Mabhudi Kanyeza saga, I doubt if our leaders at SAFA offices have an idea of that word.

Sometimes I just feel like we’re in the hands of incompetent and hopeless administrators

@ Nespray is like a movie star; Sir, i hope you were around during AFCON; SABC had dedicated timeslots for live games accross their channels, again kudos to Mr Motsweneng for insightful thinking. My point is not to dispute revenue generation but to encourage innovation to placate both sets of viewers. Are you suggesting that there are no advertisements during live match broadcasts to generate revenue?

You will recall that SABC has/d monopoly of BB bradcast under the pretext of "national interest" not a certain section of the viewers. With generations there is no hint of national interest, it is a popular soapie among specific social groupings. The two cases are barely comparable and cant mentioned in one line.

There are advertisement rendered during BB games that will enable SABC to get revenue as is the case with Generations. However, the amount of revenue generated via BB or Generations differs and logic dictates that Gnerations is the profitable of the 2 if you consider the utterances of Mr Kganyago.

here you say: You will recall that SABC has/d monopoly of BB bradcast under the pretext of "national interest" not a certain section of the viewers.

my friend, this words "national interest" tends to generalise. Its just a part of the marketing strategy adopted by the SABC. In reality, this is not the case if you consider that SA is diverse country and not anyone follows soccer. Hence on numerous occasions, the SABC can let us down by not broadcasting BB but never go wrong when ti comes to televising Generations.

again you say: With generations there is no hint of national interest, it is a popular soapie among specific social groupings. The two cases are barely comparable and cant mentioned in one line.

underline the word "popular". This implies that the advertisers can increase their customer base when their adverts are played during the time slots of generations, which gives a positive return to both SABC and the companies involved. The reason I compare Generations to BB games is because they are competitors (compete to be broadcasted), although in nature they are indirect competitors because they serve different services....their competition is bit by bit turning direct in such a way that a staunch soccer follower who also watches generations can prefer to watch generations given the oportunity costs and the level of utility he gets by watching generations instead of BB.

This problem will take a long time to resolve, its always about race in SA....its now more than 17 years since were in democracy and I dont see signs in future that the ANC can be led by a white man.

Greeting’s to the entire Bucs family.

Once more let me express our greatest appreciation to the entire football family for the support shown to us in the Champions League.

We felt the support from everyone throughout the matches we have played in this competition.

This coming Saturday once more, our roads will lead to Orlando Stadium where we take on Zamalek of Egypt. The match happens this Saturday at Orlando stadium kicking off at 20H00.

Tickets for this all important encounter are currently on sale at Computicket and Shoprite outlets nationwide. Prices for these tickets are extremely reasonable selling at R40 for adults and R12 for juveniles. We therefore urge all football lovers to go out there and get tickets so that we can all swell the ranks of Orlando Stadium.

To the entire football family, this match is very important because as a club, we carry the aspirations’ of all South African as we continue to play that ambassadorial role in the continent.

Once more, based on our appeal as far as attendance is concerned, we need that 12 man support irrespective of the teams that South African football lovers support in our domestic league.

Right now, every support is crucial. We have to do well we can only do that with the support of everybody.

Let’s all go out there once more and buy those tickets and fill up Orlando Stadium. We are not too far from reaching the semi-finals. We have to defeat Zamalek and then fight for a few more points in the next matches then we will be home and dry.

Let’s raise the South African flag high and let us all sing Nkosi Sikelela come this Saturday!

Thanks Mhlekazi. What i picked up from your last posting is that you clandestinely agree that Kganyaago can lie under the guise of marketing, while exercizing monopoly of broadcast rights. Question: why then so many BB supporters (who have "national" pride for their team) complain so much ? i cant expect gripe from generations fans. You will recall that a signed contract is a legally binding document that, when presented before a competent court of law, someonne can be found on the wrong side with breach. Kganyago is lucky becasue not too many of socer fans can stand up and take SABC to court because this is the game of the down-trodden.

On that note, it was refreshing to pick somebody's mind albeit we may not agree.
