Chiefs held, but maintain lead

Posted: 3 April 2013 Time: 09:30 pm

Maritzburg United held Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night, but Amakhosi maintain their seven-point lead atop the standings.

Mario Booysen’s goal early in the second half threw the cat amongst the pigeons, but Mulumowandau Mathoho equalised with 20 minutes to go to ensure a share of the spoils.

Bernard Parker had an opportunity to put Chiefs ahead as early as the seventh minute from a free-kick, but his goal-bound effort was comfortably saved by Shu-aib Walters.

Itumeleng Khune was called into action in the 15th minute, parrying Heinrich Isaacks’ deflected shot when he switched direction to push away the goal-bound effort.

The Bafana Bafana captain again kept the scores level three minutes later with a spectacular save to keep out Ruben Cloete’s long-range effort.

Maritzburg took the lead just after the break when Chiefs failed to clear the ball from a set-piece and the ball rebounded off Morgan Gould and towards the goalline. As the defender tried to clear the ball it fell into the path of Booysen, who slotted home from close range.

With about 20 minutes remaining the league leaders levelled matters from a corner-kick – Mathoho rising highest to power home a header beyond the reach of a back-peddling Walters.

There were a few half-chances towards the end of the game - including Cuthbert Malajila just missing a cross for a sure goal - but the two sides settled for a point which not only maintains Chiefs’ seven-point lead (thanks to Orlando Pirates drawing away to AmaZulu), but also win the Q3 award.

as long as pap & custard FC drew ,im happy. Guys, stop hating on nkatha. If it wasn't for nkatha there is no way in hell we would be in this position. Nkatha is damn useful upfront. Hes got power, he is strong and most importantly ,he keeps defenders busy and harrasses defenders wit his aggression opening up space for Parker. Bernard parker scored all his goals this season cos nkhata was in the lineup as well. Majoro is not aggresive enough to harrass defenders the way nkatha can ,hence parker never scored in those 2 games majoro started. Yes ,majoro scored alot of goals ,wit nkhatha once again partnerin him. Guys ,dnt be idiots ,yes his first touch is crap, but u cnt deny nkhatha has helped us alot this season.
Gaxa ,i believe is off form, i think baxter should give moleko a chance against arrows in his place. Or he can play josta on that position as well. Josta is decent defensively,he can read the game, skillful,he can cross and he can pass. We can't put yeye on the bench ,without him we are ######. He is too important. Thats why iv been preaching that chiefs should sign Wome of free state stars in a swap deal involving masango and zvasiya so we could have another central midfielder whol kill teams. And also sign madondo of amazulu outright. Then wel have depth in the middle for sure.

This playing of too many defenders at the same time reduces our chances to attackscore. We can do it when we play against big guns especially in their homeyard but against minnows like Maritsburg United i don't think it is necessary. I think its best we play 4 defenders and then add numbers up front to increase our scoring chances. Half a loaf is better than no bread anyway, especially when our competitors are also droping points.
