Benni: I'm a Buccaneer for life

Posted: 31 January 2013 Time: 03:35 pm

If Benni McCarthy's words are anything to go by then he would renew his contract with Orlando Pirates.

The former Bafana Bafana international striker is certainly not in two minds regarding his club preference. McCarthy's contract with Pirates in its last few months.

"I have an amazing relationship with the chairman [Dr. Irvin Khoza]… We have an understanding," he tells KickOff.com. McCarthy suggested that the ball is in Pirates' court whether they want to keep him.

READ: Benni's next move still unclear

"If he [Khoza] calls me tomorrow I will go sit down with him… I actually spoke to him recently and we will speak again after the Afcon. I don't see myself venturing out elsewhere… I'm a Buccaneer for life," he adds.

The 35-year-old's contract with Bucs expires at the end of June.

West Ham United

McCarthy completed a move to West Ham United for an undisclosed fee on transfer deadline day, 1 February 2010. He signed a two and a half-year contract that was due to run until the summer of 2012. He made his Premier League debut for West Ham United against Burnley at Turf Moor in a 2–1 defeat on 6 February 2010 where he sustained an injury that would keep him out for six weeks.[In February 2011 having played just 326 minutes of football, making only three starts and failing to score any goals for West Ham, McCarthy was left out of West Ham's 25-man squad for the rest of the 2010–11 season. He was also offered a £1 million pay-off in return for tearing up his contract. In April 2011 McCarthy left West Ham by mutual agreement, with a £1.5million pay-off, after agreeing to terminate his contract with West Ham. He made only two Premier League starts and fourteen appearances in all competitions scoring no goal.

He was a winner, nice settlement amount.
..............................................................................
Blackburn Rovers

On 25 July 2006, McCarthy flew out to England to undergo a medical and probable contract signing to join Blackburn Rovers[8] and, three days later, signed a four-year contract with Blackburn Rovers for a £2.5m fee.

After a disappointing performance in the side's 3–0 defeat to Portsmouth, McCarthy found the net on his debut at Ewood Park against Everton on 23 August 2006. McCarthy further endeared himself to Rovers fans, scoring a goal on his European debut for the club in a 2–2 against Salzburg in the UEFA Cup, and scoring another in the return leg. He finished second top scorer in the Premier League in 2006–07 with 18 league goals (24 goals in total).

The following season got off to a bad start for McCarthy when he was stretchered off in the opening day win against Middlesbrough. Benni was out of action for a few weeks and found first team opportunities limited, largely because the form of new striking arrival Roque Santa Cruz. Despite being limited to largely substitute appearances, McCarthy did find the net a total of eleven times in all competitions.

In the 2008–09 season McCarthy appeared to be out of favour with new manager Paul Ince, as the club's strike force was strengthened with the arrivals of Carlos Villanueva and Robbie Fowler to join the already established Roque Santa Cruz, Jason Roberts and Matt Derbyshire. However, he answered these critics by scoring his first goal of the campaign – a 94th minute equaliser in a Premier League match against Middlesbrough.

In all competitions, for Blackburn Rovers, McCarthy scored a total of 52 goals in 140 matches.

This reminds of the likes of Dumisa Ngobe, Jerry Skhosana, the late Manyathela, Myeni, the BB 2013 AFCON topgoalscorer, prior joining Bucs , they didnt see themselves playing for Bucs but their noisy neighbours, but as soon as they were roped in, all those desires quickly evaporated and replaced by joy (enjoyment of being associated with Bucs).

I must admit that Iron Duke played a tremendous role in maintaining Bucs brand when, at one stage (in early 90s), it looked like we would go extinct like former great teams like Highlands Park, Durban City, Benoni United, etc. He rescued the teamin less than 5yrs we were already Champions of the whole continent. There were challenges along the way especially when he paid more attention to his other interests than Bucs, that made the team to go 6yrs without a trophy. After the WC he said he will put more energy to his team, the result was double treble which got even doomsayers tongues wagging. Last year he talked about the 2nd star but got booted out before he even started to the joy of the doomsayers. However, he maintained his 2nd star aspirations and I believe without a sheer of a doubt that it will be achieved, it may not be this year still but will ultimately be achieved, simply bcos 'what Khoza wants,.....'.

I remember 'falling in love' with Pirates, I was just a kid, an infant if you will, when all the associations in the country amalgamated into one, in 1985. For me it wasnt about 'following the crowd' or about following a team that rakes cups, but I liked certain players , the likes of Botsotso Makhanya, Tebogo Moloi made me to like Pirates. As time passed by and I was growing my like turned into a love. However, the team started to deteriorate bit by bit (as said, almost went extinct in early 90s) , the painful truth is that the likes of fundowns, tortoises, swallows, and even cosmos were really powerhouses at the time. Iron Duke came around and the rest is history. However, my love and support for the team never changed even during the tough times simply bcos 'Once a Pirate,.....", indeed im a Bucanneer for life

KO is a joke of a media agency. You said it's unclear as if we at OPFC owe you any explanation of every move we make...who do we sign...which player's contract to be extended...is Kalaba signing...how much do they earn, etc. We do our things in our own pace and within the right channels. We are not chiefs who do their business at KO offices. You will only hear from us at the right time.
