Former Bafana Bafana defender Brett Evans says his decision to cut off his lengthy relationship with Ajax Cape Town has been pushed by his desire to keep on playing rather than sitting on the bench.
Evans is leaving Ajax upon the expiry of his contract after 13 years at the club during which he has become the club's record holder for most games played at over 300 games and longest serving player in the club's history.

_quote "It is very sad to be leaving because this is the only club that I have known in my professional career but I also feel leaving is the best decision that I have made in the circumstances. I didn't play much during the past season and seeing that I am coming towards the end of my career I feel I must make the most of the time that I have left. For me I don't want to be at a club when I am not playing anymore because I am only happy when I am playing. "Injuries didn't help my cause over the past season and I had to realise that I am no longer in the plans meaning I have to look elsewhere," he says. Evans adds that though there has been interest from local clubs he would prefer his next club to be from outside the country. He has already had trials in the USA with Portland Timbers and could still be heading back to the US for another trial stint at a different club. "I will prefer my next club to be from outside South Africa because I feel after 13 years at Ajax I need a completely different challenge. I could hopefully be going to another team in the US depending on what my agent Mike Makaab sorts out. In the meantime I getting to adjust to the reality of being out of contract which I have never experienced in my career," says Evans.
