AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns shared the spoils in an entertaining 3-3 draw in the Absa Premiership on Sunday.
Butholezwe Ncube grabbed the lead for Usuthu in the fifth minute with a low strike that reached the bottom corner after Andile Jali was shoved out of possession in a dangerous area.
The Brazilians, who made numerous changes to their line-up, were finding it difficult to get going inside the first quarter of an hour while the home side were buzzing going forward.
Tapelo Nyongo almost got the second goal for Cavin Johnson’s charges in the 25th minute with a close range strike at the near post but Sundowns shot-stopper Reyaad Pieterse threw his body on the line to make a crucial stop.
Masandawana debutant Phakamani Mahlambi brought Pitso Mosimane’s men back into the game a minute before half-an-hour with a close range shot at the near post, getting a second bite of the cherry after Usuthu goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs had made an initial save.
The hosts were playing a high line towards the 35th minute and were leaving a lot of space behind the defence which the Brazilians countered with long looped balls for the pace of Mahlambi upfront.
The two sides were exchanging attacks towards the end of the first stanza, but they could not add more goals on the scoreboard and they went into the break level at 1-1.
Toni Silva gave the visitors the lead a minute into the second stanza after beating his man inside the box, before slotting past Usuthu goalkeeper Josephs at his near post, 1-2.
Jabulani Ncobeni restored parity for the hosts two minutes later with a close range strike into a gaping net after Sundowns shot-stopper Pieterse made a horrible error unable to catch a cross into his grasp, 2-2.
The two sides were going at each other with pace after the hour-mark following many possession turn-overs.
Bonginkosi Ntuli then snatched the lead for Johnson’s men in the 73rd minute with a low strike into the far corner after the Sundowns defence went to sleep.
However, Sibusiso Vilakazi levelled matters shortly after coming on with five minutes remaining after getting at the end of a cross from Tebogo Langerman at the near post, 3-3.
