Cape Town City thrashed Free State Stars 5-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday.
Zukile Kewuti was given his first start for City following his graduation from their MultiChoice Diski Challenge side, while Ebrahim Seedat missed out through suspension.
As shown in their recent encounters at home, City expressed their early dominance as Roland Putsche’s shot from outside the box went wide.
Ea Lla Koto created their first chance after a long ball found Harris Tchilimbou inside the box, but the Congolese international missed his effort with a wayward finish closer to halftime.
A cross from Gift Links for City connected with the head of Craig Martin, who failed to steer the effort on target with a wayward nod ten minutes to halftime.
A minute later, the Cape Town side weren’t denied as Putsche rose above the Stars defence to head home from a corner for the lead at the break.
An early change at the start of the second half saw Teko Modise entering for Thabo Nodada for the home side, while City increased their tally from the penalty spot after a foul on Thamsanqa Mkhize allowed Putsche to step ahead and complete his brace five minutes after the break.
Stars were reduced to ten men on the hour mark following Sbusiso Hlubi’s foul on Mkhize and City took advantage two minutes later, with Gift Links adding his name to the score-sheet.
With 20 minutes to go, Siphelele Mthembu slotted in a fourth for the home side before Links added his second late in the game to make it 5-0.
City, however, also finished the game with ten men on the field as defender Taariq Fielies was given his marching orders in second-half stoppage time.
