Cape Town City earned themselves a share of the spoils with a last-gasp equaliser to force a 2-2 draw with Baroka FC in the Absa Premiership on Saturday evening.
City were hoping for a hat-trick of victories to move as high as third on the table, but Benni McCarthy made one change with Peter Leeuwenburgh returning between the sticks. Baroka also made three changes following their loss to city neighbours Black Leopards in last Sunday’s Limpopo derby.
The Citizens came out blazing and took charge of every area of the pitch, with key slick movements out and through the box, while the struggling visitors contained the attacks coming their way, but gradually crept their way up the radar as the half progressed.
With the half drawing to a close, a pin-point cross from Ayanda Patosi landed perfectly to a lurking Roland Putsche, who sent his header wide of the upright.
The bell finally rung for the hosts as Patosi slotted home from close range after Siphelele Mthembu's initial header had rebounded off the woodwork.
Bakgaga Ba Ga Mphahlele weren’t behind for long as five minutes from halftime, Tebogo Sodi got behind the defence to beat Leeuwenburgh from six-yards out.
Just as City planned a come back, further misery struck as Baroka were handed a penalty following a handball in the box by Thato Mokeke four minutes later. Striker Jemondre Dickens made no mistake from the spot, smashing the effort past an advancing Leeuwenburgh to hand the visitors the lead.
Putsche looked to take matters into his own hands as he ran forward to unleash a thunderous shot on goal that crashed off the underside of the crossbar before bouncing back into play seconds later.
After 73 minutes, the Cape Town outfit made a change in an offensive format as Matthew Rusike replaced Craig Martin as they pushed for the equaliser.
City left it late as Putsche managed to get on the end of a perfect ball to lash home the equaliser, as the two sides settled for a share of the spoils.
Baroka’s next league match is a tough battle away to title-chasing Orlando Pirates in two weeks time, while the Citizens take on Free State Stars on Wednesday.
