SuperSport United needed a second-half penalty to defeat Maritzburg United 1-0 in the Absa Premiership on Saturday evening.
Kaitano Tembo' s charges were out to put a disappointing week aside to strengthen the grip on the pace-setters, while Maritzburg were looking to ease their relegation fears.
A sliced effort on goal from Sipho Mbule showed the intent from the home side early on, while Maritzburg's Deolin Mekoa didn’t mess about business either with a shot wide of goal.
Midway through the stanza, the Team of Choice were afforded a chance to take the lead when Mekoa's free-kick deflected into the path of Pogiso Sanoka, who failed to hit the target from close range.
With little in the way of goal-scoring chances, the first half ended in a goalless slate despite the late surge from the hosts.
In the second half, Aubrey Modiba came within inches from finding the net for the home side, but he placed his effort wide of target.
Matsatsantsa were given the chance to go ahead after being awarded a penalty following an indiscretion inside the box from Maritzburg.
Modiba stepped forward to send Richard Ofori the wrong way to put Tembo’s side in charge.
Englishman James Keene forced an astounding save from Ofori to keep the score-line down, before the Team of Choice went close when Siyanda Xulu’s header required save from Ronwen Williams on 78 minutes.
SuperSport had the opportunity to go further ahead in the closing stages, but Teboho Mokoena curled his effort well off target.
It made little difference though as the Tshwane outfit hung on for maximum points, while Maritzburg fail to move clear of the relegation zone.
