High-flying Polokwane down Maritzburg

Polokwane City continued their impressive run in the Absa Premiership with a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United on Saturday afternoon.
Maritzburg fashioned up the first chance after Yannick Zakri’s free-kick was easily palmed away by George Chigova.
Fortune Makaringe fed Mohau Mokate who managed to hold up the ball for Siphesihle Ndlovu to get a shot away but it skewed just wide of the upright.
Zakri beat his man to get into the box to play in Mokate to get on the end of it to get a half-shot which sailed wide of goal.
Maritzburg asked all the questions and a minute later Ndlovu was unfortunate to see his shot off a rebound missing the target following Mokate’s effort on the edge of the box.
City came with their first effort on target with Walter Musona’s left-footed strike from outside the box after 32 minutes of action.
On the stroke of halftime, a long ball aimed to Mokate inadvertently fell to Justice Figareido who managed to get a half-volley away but failed to get it on target in the process.
After a tentative start into the second half, with a few half openings from the visiting side the visiting team began tiring after failing to continue their momentum early on.
Against the run of play the home side took the lead amidst after catching the KZN side on the back-foot from susceptible play.
A well-worked set-piece around the edge of the area by Jabulani Maluleka found Edgar Manaka to curl a right-footed shot into the top corner of a gaping net after 66 minutes.
The Team of Choice launched a surge for an immediate equaliser but Keletso Makgalwa’s cut back wasn’t successful as Bandile Shandu failed to control inside the box to get a shot away.
The win takes the Rise and Shine to third, ahead of Kaizer Chiefs who went down to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby.
