Maritzburg United and Cape Town City played out a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership clash on Friday evening.
The two sides came into the contest tied on points and a position off each other. After their midweek defeat to Bidvest Wits, the Citizens looked for an early lead.
Granted the slow start, Gift Links whipped in a free-kick from the edge of the box but dismally missed the target.
Then, Ayanda Patosi instrumental in their MTN8 triumph, lashed in from out wide but the effort bounced off the ground before Richard Ofori pulled away for a corner.
In the back of their minds, Maritzburg were gunning for revenge after losing to the very opposition in the first hurdle of the recently concluded top eight competition.
Yannick Zakri then managed to get in a shot from just outside the box after City failed to clear their lines properly, but Peter Leeuwenburgh blocked away at the midway stage.
The duo finished the half strongly, as Thabo Nodada fashioning in a low shot to Ofori with Bandile Shandu having his shot from inside the box blocked by Taariq Fielies.
Following an uninspired first half, Justice Figareido made way at the start of the second for Keletso Makgalwa- on-loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.
Irrespective of the change, the tempo of the game didn’t raise as both sides still struggled to break each other down.
The Team of Choice made their second change as the goal-scoring chances continued to wind down, as Andrea Fileccia replaced Zakri.
City’s first change happened minutes later, with Surprise Ralani coming on for Patosi, while the frustrations for the small crowd grew louder with neither side seizing initiative.
It took Ralani to get them roaring again when he struck the side-netting from a tight angle 13 minutes from the final whistle.
Towards the end, the struggle in front of goal didn’t improve despite City managing to get in a few promising positions as the game ended goalless.
