Polokwane City moved up to fifth place with a 1-0 win over league leaders Bidvest Wits in the Absa Premiership on Friday evening.
A lively start from Wits ensued, but due to lack of efficiency in attack, Polokwane threatened through the counterattack on a few occasions.
An earlier strike from the edge on the area by Mxolisi Machupu in the opening five minutes was the first chance of the game.
What soon followed was a glancing header flashing just across the face of goal by Mbuyisile Booi off a cross out wide.
After only 20 minutes, Polokwane were reduced to 10 men following Salulani Phiri’s poor challenge on Thabang Monare in the middle of the park.
The game then became scrappy towards halftime, with neither side taking initiative to plunge through goal.
Machupu looked to change that on 40 minutes when running onto a flick by Gift Motupa, but George Chigvoa narrowed the angle by stretching his right leg to clear for a corner.
A quick counterattack from Wits on the byline led by Machupu was ended with a direct shot straight to by Monare Chigova a minute from added time.
Wits returned for the second half with a change from the bench, as Vuyo Mere replaced Buhle Mkhwanazi.
Despite being a man short, the home side still found it difficult to break down the defensive block from the Rise and Shine with a number of their attacks falling through.
Scotsman Simon Murray was the second change brought on by Gavin Hunt, replacing Machupu after 58 minutes.
In the meantime, Polokwane continued to battle away, playing the hosts on the break and Booi nearly profited from this scenario but an outstretched save from Darren Keet kept him away.
Approaching the final quarter, the struggle continued for the Students. Veteran Jabulani Maluleke made them pay with a scorching strike from a free-kick on 74 minutes.
Bafana Bafana international Sifiso Hlanti attempted for an immediate response but his shot from the left side fell straight to Chigova.
Wiseman Maluleke was the first substitution instituted by Jozef Vukusic as he replaced Booi on 77 minutes.
Chigova came up with another breath-taking save as Terrence Dzukumanja aimed to get on the score-sheet off a square field pass by Deon Hotto, as Polokwane makes it two wins on the trot.
