Leopards stun City in Limpopo derby

Black Leopards marked their return to top flight football with a 1-0 win over neighbors Polokwane City in the Absa Premiership on Saturday evening at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Walter Musona had a chance in the seventh minute to open the scoring for Rise and Shine after going through inside the box, but he shot straight at Leopards goalkeeper Rotshidzwa Mulekwa.

Karabo Tshepe grabbed the lead for Lidoda Duvha instead in the 12th minute through a free-kick.

Musona was presented with another opportunity for City in the 23rd minute at close range but fluffed his chance.

Joel Masutha’s charges were absorbing the pressure after half-an-hour, looking to spring forward on counter-attacks.

Leopards were content with keeping their shape at the back and managed to go into the break having a 1-0 advantage over City.

The two sides were struggling for momentum early in the second stanza.

However, Rise and Shine upped their tempo towards the hour although they were not as quick as they needed to be.

Musona had a chance once again inside the box in the 67th minute to level matters for Jozef Vukuzic’s men but again he fired straight at Muleka.

Leopards did not commit much going forward and with a quarter of an hour remaining they were not troubling City goalkeeper George Chigova.

Goalscorer Tshepe was instrumental though for Lidoda Duvha, although they lacked numbers in attack.

Ivan Mahangwahaya had a good chance to wrap the game for Leopards ten minutes before time shortly after coming on for Joseph Mhlongo but he could not find the target.

Rise and Shine were probing in the closing minutes but they could not penetrate the hosts and rued early missed chances as they crashed to defeat.
