Bidvest Wits started their Absa Premiership campaign with a resounding 3-0 victory over Free State Stars on Saturday.
Wits started brightly when Cole Alexander looked for an early goal but fired over the top from close range.
Captain Thulani Hlatshwayo made sure of the early breakthrough, sneaking in at the far post to tap home following a good build-up on 10 minutes.
Stars threw bodies forward, searching for the equaliser and Goodman Dlamini almost answered their prayers but he struck the woodwork after a defensive lapse from the hosts.
Wits then increased their lead when Xolani Machupu headed home a ball from the wing by Deon Hotto on 29 minutes.
Machupu went close to adding a second but was unable to steer away Sifiso Hlanti’s cross early in the second half.
Stars came up with a moment of brilliance that forced Darren Keet to an outstanding save to deny Sinethemba Jantjie from a tight angle.
Wits added more with Hotto finished off a nice move for his debut strike following 76 minutes of play to end off a resounding opening day win.
