Swiss through, despite Costa Rica draw

Switzerland advanced to the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup, despite surrendering a late goal to draw 2-2 with Costa Rica on Wednesday night.

Celso Borges was unlucky not to have opened the scoring for Costa Rica in the fifth minute with a header that was brilliantly saved by Switzerland goalkeeper Jann Sommer.

Daniel Colindres almost sensationally sent Los Ticos ahead four minutes later with a curling strike that came off the crossbar.

Costa Rica, who were only playing for pride, were attacking with a lot of intensity and energy as they went looking for their first goal of the tournament.

Blerim Džemaili was clinical for the Swiss in their first clear chance, breaking the deadlock on 30 minutes with a smashing finish from close range.

The pace of the match fizzled out in the closing minutes of the first stanza as Switzerland took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Swiss were going forward in numbers in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza, giving Costa Rica acres of space on counter-attacks.

Kendall Waston finally got Los Ticos their first goal of the tournament in the 56th minute with a free header inside the box following a corner to level matters on the night.

The Swiss were cautious in their play as the half went on as they knew a draw should be enough to take them through to the next round.

Josip Drmic thought he had netted the winner for Switzerland two minutes before time when made it 2-1 in the 88th minute with a close-range finish.

However, the Swiss conceded a penalty in stoppage time and Bryan Ruiz stepped up to make it 2-2 for Costa Rica via a deflection off goalkeeper Sommer, with the official decision going down as an own-goal.
