Wits sink Pamplemousses

Posted: 10 February 2018 Time: 12:09 pm

Bidvest Wits got their Caf Champions League journey off the mark with a comfortable 2-0 pasting of Mauritian side Pamplemousses SC in the first-leg preliminary round.

The match got off on a fast pace, with Thabang Monare picking out Vincent Pule at the back post, but his header went narrowly wide of the upright.

Pule then sold a defender before whipping in a cross which fell kindly to Eleazar Rodgers to draw a save from the visiting goal-minder.

Monare and Pule combined once again, but the latter’s header this time struck the woodwork after 17 minutes.

Wits eventually went ahead through youngster Kobamelo Kodisang, who headed home from close range in the 23rd minute.

The game was opening up more for the hosts, as Buhle Mkhwanazi found himself in the middle of the box, but send his effort wide of goal on the half and hour mark.

With the rain bucketing down, so too were goal-scoring chances for the Students who gave the Mauritian champions little room to man oeuvre.

Following a brilliant through ball from Pule, Rodgers was on hand to capitalize and get his name on the score sheet with a calm and composed finish after 37 minutes.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars striker nearly grabbed his brace, but his header from Keagan Ritchie’s delivery came off the top of the goal-posts.

It continued to be a one-way traffic for the PSL champions in the second half, and Anthony Gordinho was denied their third with a good save seconds from the restart.

The elusive brace continued to elude Rodgers as he fired in a long-range effort which struck the underside off the crossbar.

With the tie in the balance, Gavin Hunt rang the changes, bringing on Daylon Claasen for Monare, although in an injury enforced scenario.

However, Rodgers game came to an end with the introduction of Lehlohonolo Majoro 20 minutes from time.

Majoro nearly got his name on the score-sheet, but watched his pin-point header denied from close range.

Ritchie’s debut then turned into a nightmare when he got sent to the dressing room for retaliation following an elbow in the face

The visitors were also reduced to 10-men for Remy pulled a reckless challenge on Pule two minutes from the end.

In the end, Wits take a rather an easy lead to Port Luis in ten days, but would have been disappointed not to put on a bigger margin.

Wits: Peters, Ritchie Frosler, Mkhwanazi, Gordinho, Pule, Ntshangase, Scott, Monare, Kodisang, Rodgers.

Subs: Josephs, Gyimah, Hlatshwayo, Claasen, Majoro.
