SuperSport United suffered a 3-2 defeat to Al Ahly Shendy in their first leg first round CAF Confederation Cup match-up on Sunday evening.
The Sudanese club signalled their intent from the get-go, making Matsatsantsa goalkeeper Boalefe Pule earn his keep as they piled on the pressure in the early stages.
Pule was up to the task, however, producing a number of fine saves and a vital interception midway through the half to keep the hosts at bay, with the two sides heading into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
Stuart Baxter went in search of goals immediately in the second stanza, brining on Jeremy Brockie for Morgan Gould, yet a penalty 15 minutes in put the South African club on the back foot as the hosts took the lead.
Ten minutes later and Shendy doubled their advantage, as Kingston Nkhatha was introduced into the game, replacing Fagrie Lakay with 17 minutes left to play.
The Zimbabwean played a crucial role in getting his side an important away goal, his low cross converted by Mario Booysen who halved the deficit.
Another strike by the hosts soon after made it 3-1, yet a stoppage time Brockie goal gives SuperSport hope ahead of next week’s second leg in Pretoria.
SuperSport XI: Pule, Kekana, Mashamaite, Booysen, Ritchie, Gould, Morton, Mokoena, Phala, Modiba, Lakay.
