Sundowns climb to third

Posted: 15 May 2008 Time: 21:41

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their fine finish to the season with hard-fought 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars at Olympia Park on Thursday evening to move into third place in the Absa Premiership.

Elias Ngwepe scored the only goal of the game just after halftime, with both teams finishing the match with 10 men.

There were rare starts for young Sundowns goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane and former Bafana Bafana striker Tyren Arendse as coach Trott Moloto shuffled his pack ahead of the Nedbank Cup Final against Mpumalanga Black Aces later in the month.

Arendse was instrumental in the first half, relishing his chance of first team football, and went close on a number of occasions.

Sundowns controlled the game in the opening period and might have been at least 3-0 up by the break, but had to make do with a 0-0 scoreline, as a mixture of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Tapuwa Kapini kept them at bay.

But they made the breakthrough soon after halftime.

Stars failed to clear their lines in the 48th minute, and Ngwepe thundered home the loose ball from the edge of the area through a crowd of bodies to give Downs the lead.

And there was late drama as both teams were reduced to 10 men. First Arendse soured his comeback with a second bookable offence on 77 minutes to receive his marching orders.

But Stars could not take advantage of the numerical superiority as six minutes later they lost a man as well. Joseph Mkalipa, booked in the first period, made a crunching tackle on Robyn Johannes and deservedly was sent for an early shower as well.

SFISO? You are now crazy. Leopards had offices here and Limpopo for various reasons. Supersport has offices only in Accre. Their ownership is in Randburg unlike Sundowns and Leopards you genius. I am highly connected I do not call numbers on the websites.

Guys lets sus not have jealous. Sundowns has beaten Supersport, Ajax, Chiefs, Plat Stars etc in and won their last +/-8 PSL games.

Sorry i have just lost count. Big teams like Supersport & Chiefs have been knocked out by Sundowns. because of jealous you Chiefs Suppoters you put faith in NFD team where your team failed.

Remember that 4.5 million you won which was used to buy Torrelba. I guess you six million to buy Old S Zuma.

Non-Sundowns supporters:
We supporters of Downs are happy with Downs form. Unfortunately there are things you cannot change. All the best for next season to KC, OP, etc. KC won Telkom, big up! Not another season without a trophy. Downs will have participated in all finals, won one so far; it may be two come sunset on 24 May, that is an achievement!

Siyanda, how many times have we told netball fans not to force their way into soccer. Whenever Sundowns win a cup, Motsepe asks the boys to keep the prize money. He would not do that if Sundowns were troubling him financially. However, I don't expect you to understand that. Awunangqondo, just like your fellow-supporters.
