Kaizer Chiefs beat University of Pretoria in a MTN8

Posted: 10 August 2013 Time: 22:10

Kaizer Chiefs beat University of Pretoria 3-0 in a MTN8 quarter-final clash at Soccer City on Saturday night.

The goals were scored by Tefu Mashamaite, Mulomowandau Mathoho and Siphiwe Tshabalala.

The game got off to an exhilarating start with University of Pretoria threatening to score as early as the first minute with Buhle Mkhwananzi’s header going just slightly off the mark after a corner.

However, it wasn’t long before Chiefs got the lead through Tefu Mashamaite from a corner kick. With the ball whipped into the box, amid a scramble the ball was cleared off the line and it fell to the former Wits defender who blasted it to the back of the net.

The goal seemed to be a confidence booster for the home side as they continued to pile pressure on the visitors with free flowing movement.

Good passing and good movement off the ball were the order of the day. Chiefs almost benefited in the 14th minute when Knowledge Musona saw his strike going across the face of the goal.

Despite Chiefs’ pressure, the visitors were able to cause troubles to the home team. On the half hour mark, Maruping’s header went wide after Mosadi’s good work down the right flank.

Five minutes before the half time whistle, Musona was at it again but his long range effort only managed to trouble the side netting.

In the early stages of second half, Steve Barker’s side were looking much sharper and convincing going forward, but their efforts were in vain.

Chiefs stood firm in their defending and continued to attack. In the 64th minute a Tshabalala corner kick was met by a superb header from Erick Mathoho, who made it 2-0.

Six minutes later, Amakhosi turned on the heat when Tshabalala combined well with Bernard Parker, seeing off two defenders before a composed finish to make it 3-0, subsequently wrapping things up on the night.

The third goal seemed certainly dampened the visitors spirit as the game turned into a one-sided affair, with Glamour Boys dominating the proceedings and substitute Mandla Masango almost made it 4-0 just before the end.

The Amakhosi join Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars in the semifinals. The Clever Boys and Dikwena also put three past Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars respectively.
