Kaizer Chiefs win Carling Black Label Cup

Posted: 27 July 2013 Time: 17:35

Kaizer Chiefs have for the first time won the Carling Black Label Cup, on their third try, beating their archrivals Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

The goal was scored by Lehlohonolo Majoro in the first-half.

From the first whistle, Pirates took the match to Chiefs at a packed Soccer City Stadium, and as early as the third minute, Happy Jele combined with Tlou Segolela, but the former’s shot was well off target.

A minute later, Tsepo Masilela was dispossessed in Pirates’ half and Segolela was on his way down the right wing. Masilela caught up, but fell down trying to make a tackle, giving Segolela more space to attack. ‘Gautrain’s’ cross was disappointing though as Itumeleng Khune made an easy save.

Ezimnyama Ngenkani had their first corner in the sixth minute with Sifiso Myeni taking the set-piece to the far post, but Lucky Lekgwathi could not make a full connection with his header and his effort went over the bar.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys eventually managed an attack of their own in the ninth minute, with Siphiwe Tshabalala chipping the ball into Pirates’ box. Instead of opting for safety Rooi Mahamutsa chest-trapped the ball, but lost control and it fell kindly to George Lebese. The left footed winger found it difficult to control with his right and the Buccaneers regrouped to clear the danger.

Chiefs were back on the attack in the 13th minute. Bernard Parker was brought down by Jele outside the box but his free-kick was over the bar.

At the other end, Khune made a rare distribution error in the 23rd minute and the ball fell to Myeni, who rushed his shot and failed to hit the target.

Eight minutes later, Segolela put in an inviting cross from the left but none of his teammates were there to finish.

Chiefs could have taken the lead in the 36th minute, but Tefu Mashamaite’s powerful header from a cross by Tshabalala was cleared off the line by Andile Jali.

There was no denying Chiefs, however, when four minutes later Lebese did superbly to evade Jele and set up a fine cross for Parker, whose header came off the bar and fell to Majoro, who needed no second invitation as he fired home to put Chiefs 1-0 up.

Collins Mbesuma almost got Bucs on level terms with three minutes of the half remaining after breaking free from Chiefs’ defenders, but Reneilwe Letsholonyane made a timely block to deny the Zambian international.

So off it went to the break with Amakhosi in the lead.

The second stanza was a tactical affair, with both sides playing cautiously. After the 50th minute mark, the fans made their call as each side made a substitution.

Pirates winger Myeni was replaced by Daine Klate, while the Chiefs faithful opted to take off the goalscorer Majoro, who made way for Knowledge Musona.

At this point chances were few and far between, so it came as no surprise when in the 58th minute Bucs coach Roger de Sa threw caution to the wind with a double substitution.

New boys Kermit Erasmus and Lennox Bacela came on for Ndumiso Mabena and Mbesuma, respectively.

Chiefs had a chance in the 69th minute, but Musona slipped in at the far post and, although he still managed to have a crack at goal, after receiving a cross from Siboniso Gaxa, his attempt was way over the bar.

Willard Katsande, who had come on for Josta Dladla, was lucky to escape a sending off in the 76th minute. The tough tackling Zimbabwean was already sitting on a yellow card when he fouled Erasmus, but Victor Gomes just gave him a talking to.

With eight minutes of regulation time remaining, Chiefs caught Pirates on the counter attack. Musona beat his man in the box and laid it on for Lebese, but the latter did not react quick enough and Pirates recovered.

At the death, Erasmus had a great shot saved by ‘Spiderkid’ and, despite the referee adding seven minutes of injury time, Pirates could not find the equaliser.

So 1-0 to Amakhosi it ended at the FNB Stadium.

Pirates starting XI: Meyiwa – Jele, Lekgwathi, Mahamutsa, Matlaba (Phungwayo 83) – Myeni (Klate 52), Jali (Ntshumayelo 85), Manyisa, Segolela (Thwala 66) – Mbesuma (Bacela 57), Mabena

I suspect Sir Baxter was a soldier. This man doesn't believe in resting players. Pirates had energy in the 2nd half,i thought he's gonna give fringe players some run. Now these rats think Twala is a star after running with tired Pa Gaxa. I thought we need 1 or 2 players...he'll we need 5 or more. as I looked at the bench, I was like moer! Masango, Rusike, Nkosi....haai noo Makhosi.

De problem at Pirates is easy to resolve, buy a lethal striker and see de ball touching de bek of de net on a regular basis. Gud football without goals is pathetic. We want to win.

Its sad for a big team like Bucs to play 180 min plus additional without scoring a goal.

Khoza plz, buy us a striker...a target man.

Nah Bhakaniya even if we can bring Neymar, he'll struggle in that stupid system that Desaster has implemented in our team. I really don't understand why he was not shown the door at the end of last season, because clearly there's no way this coach will finish this coming season. And having to bring in a new coach in the middle of the season will only distabilises our team

Happy to see the reunion of the JAce in midfield....

Bacela will be the black-sheep... like I said, if he scores 5 goals he would have far exceeded my exprctations... Not a very well considered signing that...

Mbesu-Mbesu I don't know where hid head is at... Benni at his worst is a much more threatening frontman..

The opponents of the day didn't give me the practice I was looking for... I will encounter more fire in Egypt...
