Matitzburg United beat Polokwane City

Posted: 3 August 2013 Time: 22:14

Yakubu Mohammed scored the only goal of the match as Maritzburg United defeated Polokwane City 1-0 in a League encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.

United’s new frontman Mohammed was full of running throughout the match and was not shy to fire towards the target and was eventually rewarded with a goal midway through the second half.

The Ghanaian showed his intentions from the onset, sending his powerful free-kick over the crossbar in the fifth minute, before shooting wide of the upright seconds later.

Six minutes later United goalkeeper Shu-aib was forced into action, diving to his right to parry a misdirected clearance from his own defender Mario Booysen, which almost flew into the back of the net.

United then had two good chances to break the deadlock, but Mohammed headed Dillon Sheppard’s cross wide in the 16th minutes, while the latter curled his free-kick over the bar three minutes later.

Heinrich Isaacks should have broken the deadlock in the 31st minute when he was left alone at the far post to meet a low cross from Ruben Cloete, only to fire wide of goal.

Ernst Middendorp’s side had a penalty appeal turned down in the 44th minute when Cloete was caught with a late tackle on the edge of the penalty area but the referee awarded a free kick just outside the box.

Mohammed took over the set piece duties once again but the Ghanaian failed to trouble City goalkeeper and captain Modiri Marumo as his effort sailed wide of goal.

Duncan Lechesa’s men had the first chance of the second half in the 55th minute, but Thabo Rakhale was denied by a good save from Walters, who also managed to push the ball away from the onrushing Sphesihle Nzimande.

The deadlock was broken in the 68th minute from a free-kick which saw Sheppard nudging the ball towards Mohammed, who then blasted his low shot into the back of the net to send the home crowd into frenzy.

Terrance Mandaza tried to extend the lead in the 82nd minute when he unleashed a shot from outside the box, but his effort went wide as United held on for a slender win.

Loiu Agyemang also scored on his debut & went on to be flop of the season. My point is it's immature to judge RDS's decision of not signing this guy based on the fact that he scored on his debut game.

Injalo mzala wam'.... it's indeed a false equivalency... youthfulness doesn't neccessarily equal being better.... if anything more experienced players have the battled scars from hard learnt lessons... I agree with you the u/23 policy ought to be scraped...

It's a stand-alone program unsupported by anything else... what exactly is the direct benefit for such an innitiative since an u/23 is an non-existent obsolete practice anyway...

Quotas have yet to work and have a real negative possiblity of denying late bloomers the chance to be known... a Teko Modise would have never risen from the ashes had this policy been around during his rise... besides it's just to late to be inacting youth policies at u/23 level...

Yep it's redundant & ought to be shown the bin....

I'll have to agree with all of you who feel Roger didn't give himself time to asses this guy from what I read he was much involeved the entire 90 mins infact Pirates seem to prefer locals ahead of foreingers good for national team anyway.

The damnation is in the irony.... don't miss the point people...

RDS's signings have yet to bare fruition for Pirates... yet the player he publicly mocked, ridiculed & embarrassed, turns out to be a hungry looking prospect with eyes filled with desire to make a name for himself... a player that looks to dislike a still net, a player that tries, a player well customer with the old-adage "...if you don't shoot, you don't score..." ...

He then displays maturity by not allowing RDS's mockery get into his head by giving a man-of-match performance & scoring a goal securing the first 3 points Maritzburg has ever had on match day 1.... How about that for resolution...? How about that for vindication...? How about that for irony...? How about that for RDS's decision making...?

Wena Bejane your problems is your were dancing to the wrong hit when growing up hence your extremely evil & wicked confusion of supporting Chiefs whilst being a residence of Orlando there in your Zozo which you've painted pink...

When Condry Ziqhubu was giving the wonder hit song VO - Via Orlando, you were secretly dancing to his other jam "Yellow Meliemeal" which was banned at all houses & beer halls in Orlando...

Dancing to "Yellow Meliemeal" in Orlando Pirates country has caused you irrepairable psychological damage hence your support of a bubble-gum team...
