Nigeria knocked out of Confederations Cup by Spain

Posted: 23 June 2013 Time: 23:20

Spain beat Nigeria 3-0 at the Estadio Castelao Fortaleza to top Group B and make the Confederations Cup semi-finals.

There were signs of promise from Stephen Keshi’s young Super Eagles, but their finishing often let them down, and it seemed as if Spain never really got out of third gear.

Jordi Alba opened the scoring early on, finishing off a flowing move by the Spaniards. Alba received a neat pass from his Barcelona clubmate Andreas Iniesta and skipped past three Nigerian defenders, with a lucky rebound along the way, before slotting home.

The Super Eagles caused problems for Spain’s defence in the first half. John Mikel Obi was set up by some good work from Joseph Akpala, but his attempt was thwarted by Sergio Ramos.

Sunday Mba next came close, with build-up play by Ideye Brown, but his stinging effort was edged out by Victor Valdes.

Spain doubled their advantage on the hour mark, when substitute Fernando Torres capitalised on some poor defending to head home two minutes after coming onto the pitch.

Ahmed Musa set up substitute Muhammad Gambo, who somehow managed to hit wide with only the keeper to beat, after his first touch let him down badly.

Alba sealed the win with two minutes to go, rounding Vincent Enyeama after a long pass from David Silva.

Stephen Keshi team will leave Brazil with a solitary win over Tahiti, finishing third in Group B behind Uruguay.

Spain top Group B with nine points, and face Itay in a rematch of last year’s Euro 2012 Final in the semi-final on Thursday.

I think Ideye and co strikers from Keshi is over for them in the super eagles, i am a staunch Keshi supporter but if insisting on these good for nothing strikers is what it will take NFF to sack him then let it be!..steve------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another Great comment from a staunch Keshi supporter. Now we need to go back to basics and do it like Westerhof did. We need an OPEN CAMP FOR ALL. European and home based are invited and everybody must get an equal chance.

I honestly think we should keep Keshi. But we must clip his wings. With this disgrace, he has lost the power to have the final say on who is invited to the Eagles camp. NFF MUST OVERSEE HIS INVITATIONS. But before that, we must investigate who gave the Eagles the balls to embarrass Africa by refusing to get on the plane to Brazil. If we find out that it was Keshi, I am sorry but he has to go. Selecting bad players intentionally in order to profit from sharing their bonus is a bad crime, but initiating a revolt against your country that embarrassed the whole of Africa MUST be punished.

We must be reasonable. Our Nation comes first. Slyman

Brazil 2013 confederation cup 3rd group match

Though the SE are out of the competition, I still have a lot to hope in this team.
They are surely sailing in the right direction.
It has being a long time I watch with confidence as my national side compete against the world’s finest.
This is a young squad and they have performed on the world stage with this tournament.
It was a good learning ground and I was not disappointed with what I saw of this team.
The hunger is there, and that is very fundamental to having a winning squad.

Keshi earn my praises for his courage in managing this team!!!
I am impressed with his guts, selection and vision in building a solid team!!!
All he needs is constant support and encouragement from everybody to make the team a force to reckon with.

Overall, the team is good and they can (as well as will) be better.
I believe in this team and the coaching crew and we shall qualify for the world cup and be in Brazil next year….and by then, it is will be a different SE.

Stay tuned….

God no dey sleep…..

I am happy I have seen more home based players play today. I now know they should not be included in the Super Eagles. Hopefully Keshi has seen this as well. Gambo, Ewgukwe should not return. By Naijabros---------------------------------------------------------------
NaijaBros: What is wrong with you? Did you just say we havent played enough quality friendlies? Are you sick or so? Why shouldnt we participate in real tournaments.... Ok let me think for moment...... still dont get your point!. By Blackpanther187---------------------------------------------------

It is so funny that after a humbling defeat even Keshi's main supporters are fighting amongst themselves. It is okay, even in your blind support, Oga and Blackpanther187, I still see we all want these Eagles to win. They played well in the first half, but I soon realised that if this game lasted for 180 minutes Nigeria will still not score. Our frontline was so bad, it was simply HORRENDOUS.

Based on the results we have been getting since winning the Afcon, we are definitely not improving. We need to investigate what happened, starting from the show of shame in Namibia. Then, we need to unite and forge a way forward. No need for more fighting. Slyman

Watching this game again. With better strikers, Spain would have been lucky to get a draw. Well done to the Super among the Eagles. But if your name is GAMBO, AKpala, Babatunde, and Ujah, please excuse us. We will check back with you in four years time. Slyman

Nigeria play a very good game but they problem the eagle have is striker and defender, the keeper is 100%, evening the best keeper in the world will not save the term, remember they re not hoping to get any result in this match but butting there hope in world cup, if our striker is there, Spain will not find it easy to win the super eagle, Kachi need to go back and see where he need to correct, some player did not have any business with the super eagle but you need to give them the opportunity to prove them self, remember wen Nigeria play in this year African Can of Nation, many think that Nigeria will go first around but this term play the final, let us give them chance and support them and see what will happen in next world cup

Hey fellas! Stop the blame game ok. I believe by now keshi would av realised he erred by dominating the bench with untested players, he knows better now. However the boys gave it all on the pitch today, when the notable absentees return from injury, it will be a different ball game in the qualifiers.

For the records Nigeria have beaten and outplayed the spanish national team in a world cup at 98. So what's the fuss about 'southies'? A record any SA team can only dream of but cant replicate in a millenium... Lol

if we are to be termed world class team,we have to prove ourselves amongst the best,we need to compete in every aspect of the game, from the goalkeeping,to defending, marshalling the midfield to the attacking force.
A lot of positives to be picked from this Confed cup,in my own view
1.Controlling the game in your half don't win games,we have to learn how to hold our composure in the opponents half, look at Gomo's miss
2.Our defence still needs some work done on it,probably with the injection of players like Adejo, leon balogun and Apam.
3.The midfield looks decent, but let's add more quality, this time not home based,Obiora Nwankwo,Haruna and Aluko can do .
4.Our striking force needs serious surgery,an emergency surgery at that, please, skillful, strikers who can stand their own against world-class defenders.
5.Keshi's on the right path, but he needs to be a father figure to not just home based but also foreign based players.
