Nigeria's Super Eagles were left to rue what might have been after going down 2-1 to Uruguay

Nigeria's Super Eagles were left to rue what might have been after going down 2-1 to Uruguay, a result that all but eliminates them from the tournament.

But captain Vincent Enyeama said the players had a lot to be proud of, "You are always disappointed when you lose a game, and we are not happy," Enyeama told KickOffNigeria.com.

"But we played a good game. I would say one of our best games in recent years, so I'm proud of the players today."

Diego Lugano put Uruguay in front with a somewhat fortuitous turn-in as the Nigeria defence went to a sleep.

But John Mikel Obi, on his 50th appearance for Nigeria, made the defender look like a discarded part of the furniture as he drew Nigeria level.

The Chelsea man received a Brown Ideye layup, shimmied away from Lugano with a casual drop of the shoulder and placed home with his weaker left foot.

It was a goal of spell-binding skill, ice-cold calm, exquisite technique and measured precision.

But the last word belonged to Diego Forlan, making his 100th appearance for Uruguay.

From nowhere, the Uruguayan striking trinity clicked into gear as Ahmed Musa gave up a turnover, then found himself on his behind in a failed attempt at retrieval.

Luis Suarez found Edinson Cavani, who swept out wide to the arriving Forlan. The former Manchester United man cracked home an unstoppable thunderbolt to Enyeama's top corner.

It proved enough.

Nigeria: Enyeama - Obobona, Echiejile, Ambrose, Omeruo, Ogu (Mba - 66'), Mikel, Ogude, Musa, Brown (Akpala - 73'), Oduamadi (Babatunde - 45')

Uruguay: Muslera - Lugano, Godin, Pereira, Caceres, Rodriguez (Pereira - 87'), Arevalo, Gonzalez, Suarez (Coates - 83'), Forlan, Cavani

@Slyman: What are you talkin for nonesense! Odemwingie is a top player for Christ sake! This is not my problem. But its damm obvious that his character isnt good at all. I mean he have showed it many many times. Me myself love the way he plays anybody who thinks otherwise dont know anything about football. Again But Odemwingies time is over we cant risk this set of players. And whats sooooo special about Odemwingie? If he plays better than Yakubu did in the EPL i'll buy you a Smartphone. Trust me and just remember me!

Dont you think this is the right time to back our NPL players? I mean we won the Nations Cup with them and one of them scored the winning goal. Ok let me ask you this way...: When is the right time for you to give Homebased players a chance? If we cant back the Homebased players now after we won the Nations Cup when then?

The Ezekiel guy from Belgium is huge talent and I want him to play for us. But he obviously is not interested.... John Obuh i heared tryed to contact him.... and what about the rumours that he is planing to play for Belgium? Have you thought of all this facts?

To Obinna and Ike Uche: Me myself dont understand why Keshi dont invite Obinna. Can we invite every player...? Is now Obinna now our saviour? How many medals have we won with him? I still wish to see again no doubt, but it would be stupid to think that Obinna is theeeee player that would solve all our problems.

Ike Uche was left out because of Keshi maybe thought to try out something new. What is wrong about that? This Confed Cup is a really great chance the test young players. For Chrsit sake 2014 is around the corner!

I also think we should invite Lukeman and istead of Ujah Eneramo. But my God do you really think this players will make theeee difference? Come on.... We cant invite every player. Ujah played a good season why not give him a chance?

Something is seriously wrong somewhere, the IQ of some people are program to accept defeat to anything brown coloured, so defeat to them is acceptable. Since when is playing well and losing against an opponents one should win over become acceptable. Wonders shall never end, this site is really showing the kind of mindset you have out there. Nigeria lost against a team she should have won easily and some people are content for the loss. Good for them but NOT for me.

I do not consider Malawi a foe nor Namibia or Kenya. SE are not on the same level with those minnows. Come sun come rain SE are suppose to ride on them no matter the circumstance. We belong to the top 20 football nation of the world if NFF is administered well and our best talent harness and used. SE has no reason not to have good sponsor, so is NFF. If NFF fail to attract sponsor to the glass house and SE, it is due to their incompetence. Lame excuse to these failures are nonsense.

@TeellThemm: I have heard it all before we supposed to belong to the top football nation and bla bla bla all you people do is talk and talk.

First we need to beat Malawi and than we will see, end of the story! I think we need a reality check! Look at our airport... Look at our streets.... Look at our Naira..... Look at our football clubs...

We were not born with the right to get somewhere without hard work!

I grew up in Europe and everytime i go to Nija People treat me as if I am something special. Exactly this our Problem with the Homebased. Our mentality is totally F.... up!

I am sayin this since over 10 years now: The only Problem we have with our football is allways starting from zero. How many people are shouting for Keshis sack? How many people want a new NFF? We tallllllk toooooooooo much!

I am just fed up!

Lool. If the cow in human clothing has fail Nigerians over the years, that doesn't mean the talent is not in us. Bases on the level we have attained over the years in football and the talent we keep producing years in years out, i have no doubt in my mind if competent hands manage our football including our resources great result will be achieved but as the years rolls by it shows that this "One" Nigeria is one hell of a British scam. Nigeria problem is not just only NFF but the whole system, nepotism and tribalism has replace patriotism and until we sit at a round table as a people and understand if this Nigeria is working, the bad roads, worst electricity, no pipe water, no security and corruption will continue to undermine anything called Nigeria.

Lastly, Malawi, Namibia or Kenya remain minnows in African football. If they are not minnows, then they should at-least won the nation cup among them or finalist or semi/final at the nation cup or at-least q/f or may be qualify for a world cup once or win an Olympic gold medalist. In all Nigeria misdoings i think i can still note those they are better than in world football.

I have always share the notion that Nigeria have more pressing issues than football and whether i am born in Europe of Africa i have no inferiority complex towards anyone but losing against Uruguay and accepting the defeat on the basis that Nigeria played well is disgusting and the highest level of inferior thinking.

@TeellThemm: No it ok to think so sometimes but not everytime. This is what your are tryin to say. Sometimes if your key players like Onazi, Emenike, Moses are missing than you have a problem. You can try to solve the problem with inviting your Plan B: Kalu Uche and Anichebe but this also doesnt work out just play with what you have!

If you go to the WC with this squad you cant expect mush. I dont want to start with Joel Obi and Aluko...

I dont know Keshi personally but I think he will take all the players I just mentioned to the WC, if we qualify. Plus I think he will also sit max.2 players out of Yobo, Martins and John Utaka or maybe Odemwingie on the bench.

With this type of players you will not be able to say its ok to loose against Urugay. And another thing you have to distinguish from playin against Uruguay at a WC or Confed!

On player will be dropped or should be dropped for Lukeman Haruna but who should we drop. Mba? Never! Ogu? We need him for the Defense! Ogude? Man for Dirty Work Never! Mikel Obi? Hehehe! Who should we drop for Aluko/Ezekiel?

I can assure that Keshi will not drop his Homebased, because we have to help our players back home to gain experience and show the World what they can. Especially after Mba and Ogbonna confirmed Keshis plan, why should he start droping Homebased?...

if I was a coach, and brown ideye is a striker in my team, I would be a frustrated man. I am sure he has had more near misses than any player in the world. the eagles are playing well, but no one will remember that if you don't score goals...wish them luck against spain.
