Nigeria beat Tahiti 6-1 in Fifa Confederations Cup

Posted: 17 June 2013 Time: 22:57

Nnamdi Oduamadi scored a hat-trick as Nigeria opened their FIFA Confederations Cup campaign with a 6-1 drubbing of Tahiti.

Uwa Elderson Echiejile had given the Super Eagles a fifth-minute lead, albeit in fortunate circumstances as his shot took a double deflection before sailing past goalkeeper Xavier Samin.

Oduamadi got his first of the night on 16 minutes, capitalising on a poor pass before slotting past the goalie.

It got worse for the Tahitians just before the half-hour mark when Samin failed to hold onto Ahmed Musa’s tame cross, allowing Oduamadi to tap home.

The African champions had a succession of chances to extend their lead but were wasteful in front of goal as they went into the break 3-0 up.

Tahiti then stunned with their first ever goal at a senior FIFA tournament – Jonathan Tehau rising highest at the back-post to head past Vincent Enyeama, playing in his 81st international.

However, the underdogs’ joy was short-lived when the self-same Tehau put a cross from Oduamadi past his own keeper.

And Oduamadi’s night was to get even better when he completed his hat-trick on 77 minutes; in the process becoming only the second player after Fernando Torres in 2009 to score three goals in one match at the Confederations Cup.

Echiejile put the icing on the cake with a sixth goal ten minutes from time, but coach Stephen Keshi will be concerned by the profligacy in front of goal, as well as some slack moments at the back.

Nigeria next face Uruguay, while Tahiti’s task gets even tougher as they take on world champions Spain.

Maybe the inclusion of the likes of JOEL OBI, SONE, EMENIKE, (MAYBE Odemwingie), and Moses will be enough.

I pray we can have these players for World Cup

@phatwack247 So if we beat Uruguay, what will your excuse be? I dont know why a Nigerian or an African will even wish bad for this team. After all the mess this team has been thru the last 48 hrs, am pleasantly surprised they won. Constructive criticism is welcomed but not hurtful destructive bashing of the team without any clear purpose.

Nigeria is on a 20 game winning streak. I expect and hope it continues against Uruguay!

@ those that called me names when I said KESHI will destroy our national pride in football. Most of my adversaries in this forum like KOLA NUT "palm kernel ogoguro," santi santi, & Co closely read the comments of most people about this game because it shows a lot about KESHI's selection. This is the first time I have ever seen a team win 6 to 1 with a horrible performance. A lot of the real contenders for worldcup already knows their team and bench, and KESHI is still tethering with his first 11, and CANNOT show us reasonable bench players. Simply put, our football is falling backward, and if this mess is not fixed, it will get worst. Uruguay & Spain games will put KESHI in his place, sacked. NFF has given this guy free hand to select players, and still he can't select the right players.

Players that will soon say bye-bye to SEs along with KESHI are:
Fengor Ogude
Emeka Eze
Gambo Mohammed
Solomon Kwambe
Benjamin Francis
Joseph Akpala
Anthony Ujah
Sunday Mba

Relegated to the bench
Brown Ideye
Nnamdi Oduamadi

Potentials
Ezekiel Imoh
Sone Aluko
Victor Anichebe
Osa Ebagua
Peter Odemwingie (far better than most rubbish in our present SEs)
Obinna Nsofor
Kalu Uche
Joel Obi
IK Uche
Daniel Adejo
Leon Balogun

MUST GO!_BYE

Mr. Arrogant and Brainless Stephen KESHI. He has chose to make a fool out of himself by opting for self serving agenda via bribery for selection. It is very clear what is going on and NFF will not hesitate to say bye to him. Nigeria will NOT qualify for WC under KESHI.

IT IS ABOUT TIME WE EXAMINE WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE TAHITI MATCH, AND ESPECIALLY WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE LAST 2 WKS.

A lot of fans see these team as half empty, while very few us sees the team as half full.
We played
2-2 against mexico
1-0 against Kenya
drew 1-1 against Namibia
6-1 today against Tahiti.
2wins and 2 draws , scored 10goals and 5 against.
All in all not a bad 2wks, the most important part TO ME is that my team is now on prime time, we are watching the Eagles regularly without searching for sites all over the place. A lot of people forgot that during Siasia it was tough to see these team play.
I appreciate the interest of all people, but so many fans are not enjoying the games because all they want to talk about is their faults. If you are a true fan and not pretending to be one, you see beyond the commentaries of a commentator that have sympathy for the under-dog. When the Eagles were not winning the criticisms were not as much as this, but why now?
The team today seems tired more than Tahiti, and it really has been a tough 2 wks, and i think players like Ideye should be excused to go home for a long season or come off the bench. The defense is still playing well, but needs some help.
The offense is missing it's bite, a lot of new faces created by injury, and they are not yet at par with the ist team,
The bench is the bench , if they are that good they will ask for a starter shirt, it just happened that the bench is playing most of the matches now.

All of these fair- weather fans have being warning us about doom since december and this is june, and i think is about time the become a believer, because the rest of us have accepted these team and looking forward to greater things
URUGUAY IS IN TROUBLE.

Hrkireks, lovely comment. Simply lovely. I never looked at it that way. Henceforth, lets start wishing earnestly for Mba to get a club in Europe...fast. Lol.

Keshi as a coach is not bad. I appreciate consistency for people in power. However, I only criticize his recent team selections. Why carry a bench you know ain't gonna play. Sincerely speaking, analyzing the games Nigeria has played this year with nations cup matches included, no team has dominated Keshi's team. Some people will argue that, Kenya, Namibia and Tahiti are not good teams to use to judge your performance.
The only problem with Keshi is selection. I think his approach to sticking out for so many home based players is weakening some depts. in the team. Keshi would not play them AT ALL.
I hope after confeds, he starts inviting other players in Europe especially to contest for Mba's position. Maybe that would make him increase his output in games.

BUT to sack Keshi is not the right step to take. He has done well
