Orlando Pirates beat Zamalek in CAF Champions League

Posted: 17 August 2013 Time: 22:08

Orlando Pirates were on top of their game as they hammered Zamalek 4-1 on Saturday night at Orlando Stadium in a CAF Champions League clash.

Earlier in the day, Al Ahly got back on track with a 1-0 win away at AC Leopards but Pirates had the last laugh as they went top of the log in the end.

Bucs showed their intentions as early as the eighth minute after Andile Jali was fouled on the far right. Daine Klate took the free kick but Lennox Bacela misdirected his header for Zamalek’s goal kick.

Bucs suffered a blow in the 19th minute when Jali was forced off due to a groin injury, with Lehlohonolo Masalesa taking over in the heart of midfield.

Pirates took the lead in the 27th minute when Klate played a pass to Bacela, who used his power to shrug off a Zamalek defender and fired home from close range.

However, Bucs’ celebration was short-lived.

Mahmoud Fadlalla, otherwise known as Shikabala, equalised for the Egyptians after poor defending from Pirates’ defenders.

The two sides went to the break 1-1.

As the score reflects, Zamalek were no match for the 1995 African Champions in the second stanza.

In the 52nd minute, Bacela turned provider as he played a great pass to Segolela, who needed no second invitations as he sent it beyond the keeper’s right hand to give Bucs the lead.

The Mighty Buccaneers could have gone further ahead in the 70th minute. Segolela took on the Zamalek defenders and shot with his left and while the goalkeeper made a save, he couldn’t hold on to the ball and Bacela pounced, but the striker was adjudged to have been in an offside position when Sox took the initial shot.

However, there was no denying Bucs a third in the 74th minute when Klate crossed for Sifiso Myeni, who showed composure to beat the defender and fire home.

Klate fired the final nail in the coffin in the 82nd minute after a cross from Segolela.

Pirates XI: Meyiwa - Jele, Matlaba, Mahamutsa, Lekgwathi, Jali (Masalesa 19th), Segolela (Molongoane 88th), Manyisa, Bacela (Mabena 83rd), Myeni, Klate.

Zamalek XI: Ebrahim - Aboelamaym (Hassan 57th), Ahmed, Fadlalla, Abouezeid, Abdelmalak, Moselhy, Morsy (Emam 65th), Gaber (Shenawy 71st), Tolba, Rehim.

TikiTakatiki........... I don't wanna give the man a green light just yet... What I love most about the Chmapion's league is that it's Chmapions vs Champions, big team vs big team, who all play to win, no parking the proverbial immovable vehicle... so it makes things slightly easier...
Plus, as much as it is the coaches main mandate we must also concede goti it's the players' main mandate as well so naturally the level of the performance is hightened in this respect...

Let me not cast aspersions on the coach at this time as I appreciate the way the team is going about this downloading business...

The true test of coach's character & ability is what he does against bus parkers... plus man management... who to field, when to field them & how to keep the wits up of those who aren't basking in the Champions league glory as they aren't playing a part in the biggest mandate for everyone...

I mean some things are still very confusing to me... One moment Tlou is not fit enough or is behind other players at training next thing he's in the starting lineup... Juju won our last match, is highly motivated but doesn't even get a cameo to feature, taste a bit of Africa & gain full match fitness somehow coach finds it more prudent to opt for the free-loader Mabena... Somethings I just don't understand via the coach..

mna i dont weather the white nights were hammared by 10-0...but still zamalek are the 2nd best in the continent and al ahly are the best (12 titles between them)...just like in national teams. egypt won won 3 afon titles in a row and i witnessed that. beating cameroon by 5-2. ivory coast by 4-0 and 4-1 in different nations cup.

Im not hearing about a fluke star or fluke 1996 historic moments which is now only maintained by:

not producing quality that is of european standard (orlando rats in the past 5 years)

not qualifying for tournaments (bafana and chips collectively)

buying 20 players in 1 year and finish in mid table (signflopps)

empty stadiums. lack of goals. goalkeeper player of the season.

We don't entertain rubbish questions from Chiefs stupid fans.

We have African giants to sly not Soweto giants which cheats in every way to beat Pirates.

In RDS I have a young and growing who wants to make history for himself.

Viera Masalesa is brilliant player, GI do u reallly need that Furman. RDS is the most unfortunate coach, I would also struggle with Jali,Bibo,Ace,Viera,Manti
