Pirates beat Al Ahly in CAF Champions League

Posted: 4 August 2013 Time: 18:27

Orlando Pirates beat Al Ahly 3-0 in their Champions League clash in Egypt to go top of Group A.

AC Leopards beat Zamalek in the other Group A match, 1-0, meaning Bucs go to the top of Group A on four points (+3 goal difference).

Leopards have four points too, with +1 goal difference, while Zamalek have one point (-1 goal difference) and Al Ahly one point (-3 goal difference).

After some good build-up play early on, Al Ahly came close when Shehab Ahmed found himself in space, but he hit his shot just wide.

Pirates opened the scoring against the run of play, after some fantastic passing between Thandani Ntshumayelo and Collins Mbesuma resulted in Ntshumayelo finishing clinically from 14 metres out.

The visitors sat back a little after the opener, and were lucky not to concede on 17 minutes, when Saad Samir had a shot on target after a scramble resulting from a free-kick, but Lucky Lekgwathi cleared the ball off the goal line.

On the half-hour mark Mbesuma came agonisingly close with a free-kick, and a few minutes later Andile Jali brought down Ahmed Abdul Zaher in the box and Ahly were awarded a penalty.

However, the Egyptian giants were denied an equaliser by Senzo Meyiwa, who made a brilliant diving save to deny Walid Soliman from the spot.

Al Ahly were then reduced to 10 men when Ahmed Abdul Zaher was shown a second yellow just before half-time.

Pirates got their second and third goals in            quick succession. First, Daine Klate was fouled in the box by Ahmed Fathi, and Jali coolly converted the penalty.

Three minutes later Jali turned provider, flicking the ball on for Sifiso Myeni to latch onto, round the keeper and toe-poke home.

Lennox Bacela almost added a fourth on 78 minutes, but his shot hit the crossbar.

Credit where credit is due Roger's tactics were spot-on,,,and Man O! Man when we had them on the ropes we just looked SPECTACULAR and like Barcelona,,,Mayiwa's penalty save was crucial,,,Jali, Jali, Jali not since Krol left did he play like that (though Manyisa remains my favorite player in S.A)...Al Alhy shall never forget the day the played the Might of Orlando,,,Black is Back, Black is Pirates...forget the fasting, forget no fans in attendance, no comment line in the result column.

Myeni must really pull his socks up......there is no player that has been given so much chance at Pirates but he is not showing up.

Lets stop blaming the coach's tactics. We are playing top sides, some times playing away from home, so we need to be conservative, otherwise we will be the whooping boys. I am glad it paid off today, though the style of play is not what we are used to. I think the coach knows what he is doing, its just a matter of time it pays off.

Fact 1: al ahly had an option to break fast for this encounter but they refused....it was not their first match on fast ever since their formation or during all those seven stars...they knew very well what they were doing, they have done it several times.
Fact 2: the referee was very professional and remain consistend during the entire match...
Fact 3: de sa is not totaly worn out....yes he played with a predictable formation bt I enjoyed how he kept the team intact when ahly looked most dangerous and literaly parked the bus(first time I saw OP park a bus like that) and when he had an advantage the team would play the normal pirates way of carpet football using the wings and down the midle, then come back to defend as a pack....I enjoyed hw he proved me wrong by not bringing in segolela and opted to kill them through the middle field with Jali....
Fact 4: senzo meyiwa and andile Jali are better than their counter parts(you knw which) respectively. Jali made the game look easy and senzo is not overated for nothing...he organised his walls very well during set pieces and we got to see why they made him an overnyt idol in Lubumbashi.....
Fact 5:the prospect of a second star looks promising....and with God it will be possible. Therefore let us not forget to give thanks, stay strong and support the team......and congrats to all the big teams in Mzanzi, this weekend u all went out and stamped your authority...good weekend for football....
