Pirates beat Al Ahly in CAF Champions League

Posted: 4 August 2013 Time: 18:27

Orlando Pirates beat Al Ahly 3-0 in their Champions League clash in Egypt to go top of Group A.

AC Leopards beat Zamalek in the other Group A match, 1-0, meaning Bucs go to the top of Group A on four points (+3 goal difference).

Leopards have four points too, with +1 goal difference, while Zamalek have one point (-1 goal difference) and Al Ahly one point (-3 goal difference).

After some good build-up play early on, Al Ahly came close when Shehab Ahmed found himself in space, but he hit his shot just wide.

Pirates opened the scoring against the run of play, after some fantastic passing between Thandani Ntshumayelo and Collins Mbesuma resulted in Ntshumayelo finishing clinically from 14 metres out.

The visitors sat back a little after the opener, and were lucky not to concede on 17 minutes, when Saad Samir had a shot on target after a scramble resulting from a free-kick, but Lucky Lekgwathi cleared the ball off the goal line.

On the half-hour mark Mbesuma came agonisingly close with a free-kick, and a few minutes later Andile Jali brought down Ahmed Abdul Zaher in the box and Ahly were awarded a penalty.

However, the Egyptian giants were denied an equaliser by Senzo Meyiwa, who made a brilliant diving save to deny Walid Soliman from the spot.

Al Ahly were then reduced to 10 men when Ahmed Abdul Zaher was shown a second yellow just before half-time.

Pirates got their second and third goals in            quick succession. First, Daine Klate was fouled in the box by Ahmed Fathi, and Jali coolly converted the penalty.

Three minutes later Jali turned provider, flicking the ball on for Sifiso Myeni to latch onto, round the keeper and toe-poke home.

Lennox Bacela almost added a fourth on 78 minutes, but his shot hit the crossbar.

I have noticed something very interesting about Pirates:

We were leading 3-0 and the guys were playing possession football in Al Ahly's half of the field. I counted and there were approximately 25 passes made. The movement off the ball was impressive and they were opening up the Al Ahly defence.

Question: Why did they not play like this in the beginning?

Answer: Quite obvious. They lack self confidence coming into the game. It was only when their confidence was high that they played those good passes.

Recommendation: The guys need to be more confident and comfortable coming into the game. They can tear apart any opposition when they're in that mood.

Congratulation to Roger de Sa for a well organised game. You could see that Pirates were tactically well oiled from the start of the game. When they didn't have the ball, 10 guys were defending and closing down the spaces. But this same principle needs to be applied when going forward. If 10 guys can defend, why can't we let 10 guys attack?

And Roger de Sa impressed me when he took off Bibo for Mabena who made many of his critics feast on humble pie. The substitution was bold and it showed that Roger de Sa was not trying to defend 1-0 lead but wanted to improved and that's exactly what happened. 2 more goals were scored.

Eish that assist by Jali was pure class and Myeni's goal was equally impressive. Good game.

But damn. Roger de Sa likes to put on Bibs

Weh mame! Wait til you hear the excuses from the haters towards Pirates' win today, yet a few hours they were honking all over this site about how much Al Ahly will "beat" us. Mncim... 2nd Star Washelela had to tell one of them to go hang themselves; I wonder if they did til kuze kulenge ulimu.

Before I get to gameplay from the players, I must say the officiating in this game was simply sublime, classy and DISTINCTIVE! We need a referee like that in the PSL. Not this circus-circus of Gomez, Bennet & Co. This is how officiating is conducted in the high leagues; NOT high school leagues like you-know-who.

We did say that the issue of fasting will have no bearing in Al Ahly losing, but simply tactics as I did mention earlier in the day. As you saw, the heat worked in favour of Al Ahly and against ur and these guys from Egypt have more than 20 years each of fasting experience and I did say Al Ahly will be no walk in the park, but that we will win! I know Muslims and I have many Islamic friends and they will tell you that 12 hours of no food cannot kill a man nor slow them down. I know very well that these Zebras were smilling when Al Ahly were out-pacing us in the first half and were licking to write bile; how unfortunate now! Your pre-party was spoiled by a BLACKout from Pirates!!!

Great approach by RDS and the players. I saw more of Jali in the second half than in the first. As the temperatures cooled down, we started playing like the real Bucselona we are. It was a game of two halfs really and we are the FIRST and ONLY team from Southern Africa to beat Al Ahly in their own back yard. Many have tried (without need of mention coz bayazazi bangobani and even allowed Al Ahly's goalie to score) but failed!

Go ahead and bark you dogs. Today ends with BLACK! When you close your eyes you see...? Dankie!

I still don't see Chibuku FC progressing to the semis. Al Ahly asked for the postponement of the match and we all saw why. Anyway any half decent team would have won against a team that has been fasting for 20 days.
