CAF Champions League match report: Orlando Pirates draw at home with AC Leopards

Posted: 20 July 2013 Time: 22:08

Orlando Pirates were dominant against AC Leopards, but walked off the field with just one point in their goalless first match of the CAF Champions League group stage.

Pirates had their first corner right after the start, but Leopards defended well to clear. On the other end, the Congo Brazzaville side showed their intentions in the third minute when Heritier Seda put in cross and as Bucs defenders lost their way in the box, Rudy Bhebey Ndey shot over the bar.

In the 11th minute, Daine Klate beat the offside but couldn’t hold on to the ball and the chance was gone.

Pirates had a scare in the 22nd minute, but the Bucs faithful, in the end, breathed a sigh of relief when Junior Mouzita attacked from the left and given space to take a shot which ricocheted off the crossbar to safety.

Not to be outdone, Bucs had their best chance of the half in the 42nd minute but the chance was missed. Sifiso Myeni beat the defenders down the left, but Klate, who could have finished, was a bit forward and the ball went just behind him.

The score was 0-0 at the interval.

Pirates came out for the second half a different side and created chances from the word go. New signing Lennox Bacela’s header was cleared off the line in the 49th minute.

It was all Bucs at this stage.

The Soweto giants had a glorious opportunity in the 65th minute, but Bacela fluffed it. Bucs had a quick counter attack after a throw in by Leopards with Myeni, who didn’t waste time putting in a cross and Bacela was left with the easiest job, but shot straight at the goalkeeper.

For the umpteenth time, Pirates had another chance in the 83rd minute but Oupa Manyisa’s attempt was blocked inside the box.

In the end, though, it wasn’t Pirates’ day as both sides shared the spoils.

Orlando Pirates XI: Senzo Meyiwa, Happy Jele, Thabo Matlaba, Rooi Mahamutsa, Ayanda Gcaba, Thandani Ntshumayelo (Mabena 83rd), Andile Jali, Oupa Manyisa, Sifiso Myeni, Daine Klate (Masuku 75th), Lennox Bacela.

AC Leopards: Lawrence Ngoe, Ulrich Mombo, Boris Ngounga, Rudy Bhebey Ndey, Cesaire Gandze, Hermann Nkodia, Childran Miangounina, Chardin Mfoutou, Herman Lakolo, Heritier Seda (Bienvenu Kombo 70th), Junior Mouzita (Eric 62nd)

Booked: Mfoutou.

We can still beat AC Leopards in their own backyard, we just need to have a good tactician.

Aay I hate caf and their competitions mxm how can pirates go on without their main sponsor on their shirt, just because orange is the main sponsor of caf so vodacom can't be advertised on pirates shirt that's bull, here at home absa is the main sponsor of the league but nedbank is sponsoring the national cup mxm, africans we are still far behind in terms of civilazation

Hahaha, stop dreaming chief. leopards hasn't lost a game at home in the champions league for the past 2 years running. They have won all 6 games. So ur chances a slim to non-existant..

But as a South African i will wish u luck because u will need it...

It's not a bad start Mr. Editor its actually a false start. I like it for the Pirates fans who keeps on insulting us as if we are responsible for their mishaps. I don't care about the CBL cups they can keep it all I want is to make sure that they stay away from our League championship cup.

Ac leopards is in the middle of de season in brazaville premier league.

Pirates last official game was last season. So this sugest unfit Pirates playas outplayed fit ac leopards playas, pity, de wher no goals.....but i see the road to de promise land, de road to 2nd star very clear.

Pirates wil do well in de ada games considering their fitnes level will have improved.

Lets stop pointing fingas, Bacela did well. On de intro of Mabena, de comentators made it clear dat Mbesuma return frm evry pre-season having gained a kilo n half, lol. So it was impossible for Mbesu Mbesu to run and tussle de ac leopards, in such a high tempo game.

Myeni wil skin defendas dis season, i was impresed by Gcaba, Mahamutsa and Tendani Ntshumayelo. Thabo festival Matlaba played his normal game. Meyiwa improves in each game. Bacela did well for a new signing in such a packed stadium....wher de responsibility of scoring rested on his shoulders.

Jali was not at his best, blame it on de injury he got midweek. A below par perfomance from ace of spades...but he have something to build on.

RDS must introduce de subs on tym. But a tacticaly sound game from The Chosen One tonite.

Black upping the bucs. Over and out.....de movie is finished (hint: chek my name), lol

RDS needs to be told that there is substitution in soccer. OP would not win anything under Roger de Sa. Stupid coach who only believes in defence! When would he be fired maar?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sure Bakaniya, he was suppose to take out klaite early in the 2nd half. I am still not convinved about RDS ability to giude us to any silver ware.

Manyisa was just all over the field and not supporting Bacela. We need an attacking central middlefilder who will be able to support our lone striker. Manyisa's attacking abilities are not convicing. RDS must decide who will partner AJ between Manyisa and Thandani, and not play 3 of them at the same time
