Tlou Segolela scores twice as South Africa beat Lesotho

Posted: 2 June 2013 Time: 15:50

Tlou Segolela scored both goals as Bafana Bafana coasted to a 2-0 friendly win against Lesotho in Maseru on Sunday afternoon.

Coach Gordon Igesund fielded a vastly different side with one eye on the two 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Central Africa Republic and Ethiopia, but still managed to achieve get the desired result and see his charges rack up some valuable game-time.

Predictably, it was all the visitors in the opening exchanges, though the wind and artificial pitch hardly made things easy.

Bernard Parker had the first half-chance on 10 minutes when he rose highest at the back-post to meet Siphiwe Tshabalala’s cross, but his effort lacked power and was easily gathered by Kholuoe Phasumane.

A minute later and Katlego Mashego should have opened the scoring when ‘Shabba’ played him in, but he struggled to get the ball out from under his feet and dragged his shot inches wide of goal.

Oupa Manyisa fired a powerful effort narrowly over shortly afterwards, before Parker again miscued a header – the wind wreaking havoc with the Bafana striker’s timing.

Segolela scuffed a shot from the edge of the area, before Parker’s free-kick, just past the half-hour mark, hit the crossbar, with Phasumane making an excellent save to keep out Mashego’s follow-up header.

Lesotho had some good chances towards the end of the half, but on both occasions Thulo Ranchobe was denied by Wayne Sandilands.

Bafana eventually had the ball in the back of the net when Segolela tapped home Tshabalala's cross-cum-shot on the stroke of half-time, though replays suggest he was marginally offside.

Igesund brought Senzo Meyiwa, Tefu Mashamaite and Daine Klate on at the start of the second half and, after a slow start, Bafana eventually got into gear and extended their lead on the hour-mark.

Segolela was again the scorer, doing brilliantly to turn and shoot into the far corner after the Lesotho goalie had dropped Daine Klate’s cross.

And it should have been 3-0 on 67 minutes when Parker was played clean through on goal but, having chipped the ball over the onrushing Phasumane, his shot was cleared off the line as the ball held up on the pitch and into the wind.

Lesotho sent a warning to Bafana that they weren’t about to roll over when substitute Katlego Moleko fired a shot from range which came back off the crossbar.

They came even closer on 81 minutes when Meyiwa tipped Mashego’s shot against the upright, but Bafana did enough to see off the late threat and cruise to victory.

Lesotho starting XI: Phasumane, Maswalle, Mothoana, Ntobo, Maple, Mokhakhane, Mofolo, Ranchobe, Marabe, Potloame, Lekhooman

South Africa starting XI: Sandilands (Meyiwa 46th), Ngcongca, Nunes (Langerman 56th), Nthethe, Mathoho (Mashamaite 46th), Furman, Segolela (Henyekane 75th), Manyisa, Tshabalala (Ntshumayelo 82nd), Parker, Mashego (Klate 46th)

It could've been 4-0, but not bad at all. Pirates should hold on to Segolela otherwise they're gonna regret it.

But Tlou is better ,indeed he scored a brace and that won't change.

Yeah neh. We won but Not so convincing.
It's like our standard has gone so low that we struggle against Lesotho.
Just a friendly, but it just shows the general standard,,,, we are no longer a powerhouse.

Congrats anyway.

I saw Irvin Khoza and Motsepe @ the Marathon today looking @ which athletes to sign. Apparently they want to replace Klate and Henyekane respectively. Kodwa Khoza ended up signing a 58 year old who gave up before the finish line. According to Khoza, the old man will be replacing Benni McCarthy!!!

Poor goalkeeping on the second goal but all in all poor planning from the coach and with the way Lesotho is playing really they need a coach with vision this coach is clueless

We should have scored more against such a small country. They gave us a good run for our money though...well done to them.

If Khoza and De sa let go Tlou segolela i will support celtics. That will be the most awful decision after letting go Krol. I will not sit with #### in our camp.

I remain Bucs fan untill the flying rumours of Tlou being released to zebras come true after he declared that he still want to play for bucs.....

Nowhere in your article do you describe the first goal, so how do you now say Segolela was "again" the scorer? And how does Mashego come close to scoring for Lesotho in the 81st minute when he's a Bafana player who was replaced in the 46th minute? Poor form Mr Cooper! And KickOff being such a huge news platform is this Cooper chap the best you can offer? I'm sure there's thousands of people, even ordinary football lovers, who can do a better job.
