PSL match report: Kaizer Chiefs win League

Posted: 15 May 2013 Time: 21:21

Kaizer Chiefs needed just one point to win the 2012/13 Premier Soccer League and they got it with a 1-1 draw with SuperSport United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday.

See a gallery of the celebrations HERE!

The draw ensures the Phefeni Glamour Boys win the coveted League trophy for the first time in eight years.

The first half was nothing to write home about, however. Chiefs lacked composure throughout the half and the two teams went to the interval goalless. In fact, it took 25 minutes for a goalkeeper to be called to real action, when Tefu Mashamaite was adjudged to have fouled Atusaye Nyondo in the 25th minute.

The referee on the day, Thabo Nkosi, awarded a free-kick to Matsatsantsa a Pitoli and Kermit Erasmus hit a direct shot that was saved by Itumeleng Khune.

Chiefs had a chance to take the lead on the half-hour mark, but Bernard Parker failed to take full advantage after a long ball from the back hit Lehlohonolo Majoro, who lost his balance.

Parker picked up the pieces when the ball fell into his path in the box, but smashed his shot wide.

Six minutes later Chiefs had another chance to draw first blood, but this time Majoro was denied by Ronwen Williams, who used his right leg to block the shot in a one-on-one situation.

On the stroke of half-time, Williams was called in to deal with a cross but mistimed his punch, and the ball fell kindly to Siboniso Gaxa, who shot over the bar despite having acres of space.

Chiefs came out all guns blazing for the start of the second half and it was no surprise when Majoro put them ahead just four minutes after the restart.

Gaxa played a long ball into the box, Williams let it bounce and Majoro picked it up to score with his left foot into the empty net.

Chiefs continued to push forward for more and, in the 59th minute, Parker was allowed space to shoot from outside the box but found Williams well positioned to make the save.

Then it was SuperSport’s turn to attack. Substitute Clifford Mulenga, who replaced Mark Haskins, dribbled his way towards the Chiefs box in the 67th minute and passed to George Maluleka whose shot was decent but Khune made the save for a corner.

From the resulting set-piece, Ashley Hartog’s header hit the crossbar and Chiefs cleared.

In the 74th minute, the Tshwane side was given a free-kick on the edge of the box after Parker committed a foul.

Sameehg Doutie had a shot at goal, Khune got down to block it but Zuma was there to finish off. However, the goal was ruled out as the veteran striker was ruled offside.

Matsatsantsa eventually got the equaliser with two minutes of regulation time remaining. Doutie passed the ball to the overlapping Maluleka who crossed for Zuma. ‘Rhee’ controlled the ball superbly and hammered home.

That is how it ended and Chiefs are crowned champions.

Fake champions. Please do not make any noise next year about Africa's mistreatment of SA teams. Please do not run away from Africa because of financial problems. Please tell the family not to waste all the money the league will give you so that you can be able to travel to Africa. Do not call for our government to subsidize you like you did the other year. You shall use your own money for African travels... and finally please make it a point that you reach at least the quarterfinals following in the footsteps of your big brother.

Kiazer Chiefs is a private entity - not a pyramid scheme or an NGO. In business language we are here not make a profit.

Mind I remind you that when Pie-rats won the Star in Africa - the was no prize money.
So to us, it did not make business sense to travel there. Embroidery is cheap to put a yellow star on your jersey. If that start increased the value of you shirt I would understand.

We spent over 20 Million to bring in quality players. And you brag about winning 40 million in two seasons and traveling to play in Africa.

We will play the champions league next season.
We will not finish the season without silverware again.
We will retain the Glory again next.

We are number 1 - That's what we are.

He he, the league is a marathon. We started by sprinting and left everyone behind. By the time we started faltering, they couldn't catch us. Its feels good being a Champ. When we were winning the Q innovations some were saying they don't care about such but the league. How could ppl dream of winning the league without winning at least one of the Quarters? I give credit to where it is due, Zebras deserved to be league champions this season, as they made sure from the start that they mean business.

As for my beloved team, The Sea Robbers, we know we did not do our best this season and we must learn from this, and there is still room for improvement. Let us not think that we will win the league every season, at least we are fighting for the second spot, which is not bad at all. Lets now put our focus in reinforcing our team as the biggest league in Africa is taking off.

Khosi personifiedposted: 08:38 am,

As if when zebras won the Mandela Cup (the least prestigious of the African club cups) there was any prize money. It's all about football my man. The prize money for winning a world cup used to be lesser than winning the Euro cup (didn't care to check now) but you cannot honestly tell me that any country would rather win the former than the later. I would rather win the African Champions League than SA league if given a choice even though I would play to win both (money or no money). As a fan I don't care whether Khoza get R1 for winning that cup or not. That is none of my business. I just want prestige. To be the best team in Africa... full stop. To me Pirates is not a business it is a football club. To a family club like zebras (hoping that you are not a Motaung) a football club is a business. I rest my case.
