SuperSport United beat Platinum Stars in Nedbank Cup

SuperSport United are through to the Nedbank Cup Final after an action-packed 3-2 win over Platinum Stars on Wednesday night.

The Tshwane side will meet Kaizer Chiefs on May 25 at a venue to be announced on Thursday, but which is believed to be the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The North-West started the better side, showing their intentions as early as the fifth minute when Tintswalo Tshabalala shot from outside the box, but his left-footed strike found Ronwen Williams in a good position to make an easy save.

Barely a minute later, Vuyo Mere whipped in a cross from the right, but his intended target Henrico Botes couldn’t connect and the chance to go further ahead was missed.

SuperSport were not happy to be just on the receiving end and responded when Sameehg Doutie put in a dangerous cross from the left that was cleared to safety in the eighth minute.

In the 21st minute, Erasmus scored after being put through one-on-one by Doutie, but the goal didn’t count as the nippy striker was flagged offside.

Three minutes later, in the 24th minute, Dikwena drew first blood. Thuso Phala beat the SuperSport central defenders for pace, but Williams did well to block his attempt.

However, Williams’ teammates went to sleep, allowing Tshabalala to capitalise from the rebound. The left-footed midfielder picked the pieces, pushed the ball forward and slammed it past Williams.

Botswana international Mogakolodi Ngele could have put Stars further ahead on the half hour-mark, but he miscued a shot inside the box with his weaker right foot.

Matsatsantsa came back from the second half the better side and to make matters worse for Dikwena, Botes was stretchered off injured and replaced by Siphelele Mthembu just four minutes into the second stanza.

SuperSport United drew level in the 51st minute courtesy of Erasmus, who beat the defence for pace to slot home. A couple of minutes later, he could have put his side in the lead but he was unlucky as his shot hit the crossbar.

However, SuperSport did take the lead in the 79th minute when substitute Clifford Mulenga took advantage to score. Stars keeper Kabelo Dambe appeared to have been fouled by Mogogi Gabonamong, but the referee allowed the game to go on and the Zambian put his side in the lead.

It wasn’t over, though.

Phala was brought down by Bevan Fransman in the box in the 90th minute. Young striker Thabani Mthembu, who had come on as a substitute a couple of minutes earlier, stepped up and Williams saved the initial spot-kick. The linesman called for a retake because Williams had come off his line and Mthembu converted at the second attempt to take the game into extra-time.

Early on, Phala hit the side-netting from a tight angle down the left when perhaps a better option could have been crossing for Robert Ng’ambi in the box.

SuperSport sealed the tie with a penalty of their own in the 105th minute when Edwin Gyimah was fouled by Gumede. Veteran striker Sibusiso Zuma made no mistake from the spot-kick.

1. That is the first season that Platinum Stars has been on song

2 They should be grateful for their achievement and take it to the next season where they have a chance to fair much better or even win some silverware including the ABSA Premiership.

3. All is not lost as you will be position 2 after being walloped by Bloemfontein Celtic

4. Take pride that you are amongst the big 3 teams in terms of performance
..............................................................................................................................................................
1. You are lying my brother, PSTARS won Telkom Cup and ended in 2nd position in 2006/7 season. (note; the season is still on, no team ascended the podium to collect league trophy)

2. They achieved nothing thus far this season, there is nothing guaranteed next season especially that some of their key players that contributed immensely to their league run thus far are leaving.

3. The season isnt concluded, people can only wish now, only what will transpire on the pitch will confirm ultimate position on the log, not minying people`s wishes

4. As said earlier being in 2nd position when the season is still on (like now) or ended isnt a new thing at PSTARS as it occured in 2006/7

while our Task team is monitoring the situation very closely.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chiefs will not rely on other teams to win the league. I thought by now you will be tired of asking other teams to beat Chiefs. We will beat SSU whether you like it or not mpya ke wena.

By the way Chiefs may not even need to beat SSU to win the lig after Arrows hammer PS.
--------------

Khosi mice will stress u. 1st ask urself how can a team that has won once in 9 games win 3 games in a row?

Just wishful thinking and painful hearts for the mice, and lots of prayers for a miracle, hehehe. It's only Platinum that have a realistic chance of upsetting Chiefs, the rest are just hanging on by mathematics, nothing else..

one thing PS away record is very poor they won six and lost 6...they really havent done that well away, ARROWS on the other hand are faced with relegation battle which means they will need all the points to survive or else they will find themselves having to NFD play-offs to deal with!!! the nice thing ARROWS have already done their job for the season which is to donate points GORILLAS...whateer they do it's not to help us win the league but more of a fight for their PSL survival!!! like i said SSU needs to secure a top 8 spot which they will achieve when they get 3 points, but i dont see them going for broke in all remaining league games as they would want to win the NEDBANK...they wont risk injuries and suspensions over the league games, again they are playing too many games in a space of a week...so they will chose their battles very carefully!!! hence SWALLOWS might be easy points for them!!!!

I dont expect you or any tortoise to think such is achievable, if in 'CAF' that you make noise about now, you never gave us a chance saying from the beginning we will get knocked out in preliminary stage and have been 'predicting' since then that we would lose

@Donald Duckposted: 07:43 am | Report Sameegh Doutie is a very good player, he was on fire..
==========================================
Sameeq Doutie can be usefull at naturena next season far much better than masango and company and apart from him i heard they want Erasmus not knowing if they willultimately get him but i also like this Gumede defender at Dikwena.Cool and collected even though he caused a penalty

-----------------
That plat stars defender is a good prospect indeed. I don't know about Erasmus, to me he is overhyped like Wayne Rooney. Make no mistake, he is a gud player but I don't think he is that gud (just my opinion). Knowing the greedy SSU, they will want 10 Million for him

Anyway, all players that can help on our African journey next season are welcome, quality all the way with new signings, we don't want average joe's

GORILLAS are actually been fooled by the CAF results forgetting that they last won a game against WITS and since then they havent won their pst two games!!!! they lost in DRC but still progressed to the next stage, but from wat i read herer their confidence is so high as if they have a winning momentum to guarantee them all 9 points!!!!

again this is PSL and MARABASTAD FC are only 4 points away from top 8 and they will fight for them!!! remember that we are talking of a team that recently managed to convert their chances and coming from 2 wins compared to GORILLA FACES from 2 loses...

1. Past games have no bearing on future games, tortoises lost to Ajax their last game , would you use that as a basis to say they will lose their next game? Im sure you wont

2. Pirates always create winning momentum, they dont wait for it to fall from the sky. You also think that topping the charts creates a winning momentum for league title, yet you have a different opinion when it comes to other team, double stds. Pirates can get 9 pts, thats not guaranteed but possible.

3. Fundowns will fight for their objectives, as much as Bucs will. Past games dotn guarantee any future games results, otherwise your team would have either won or drawn against Ajax

You talk as if only Arrows and Fundowns have objectives and not PSTARS and Bucs. Thats tortoise for you.

Prior playing PSTARS tortoises were saying they will beat PSTARS and go to Ajax game to lift the title, hence some went as far as wearing printed 2012/13 league champs t-shirts. Winning league title isnt determined by topping the charts for better part of the season, but where you are when the season is concluded
