Kaizer Chiefs through to Nedbank Cup Final after beating United FC

Posted: 4 May 2013 Time: 22:13

Kaizer Chiefs booked their place in the 2013 Nedbank Cup Final with a 2-1 win over a spirited United FC side at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Premiership leaders stayed on course to win the double this season thanks to first half goals from Lehlohonolo Majoro and George Lebese. United FC’s goal was scored from the penalty spot by Walter Maponyane.

United FC attempted to unsettle Amakhosi early on but instead conceded a goal in the fifth minute of the match.

Bernard Parker got on the end of a great through ball over the top of the Vultures’ defence from Siphiwe Tshabalala before squaring the ball to Majoro who tapped in from close range.

Amakhosi extended their lead 19 minutes later when Majoro’s shot from just outside the area rattled the crossbar and the post before falling favourably for Lebese, who nodded home past Bongani Mpandle.

United nearly pulled one back in the 32nd minute, when Thabo Makgothi was disposessed brilliantly by Itumeleng Khune before Willard Katsande cleared a Siyabulela Shai effort off the line.

Chiefs deservedly went into the break two goals to the good. The Soweto giants created the better chances of the half despite United enjoying the lion’s share of the possession.

Majoro had a great opportunity to complete his brace in the 54th minute of the game, when he got on the end of a through ball from Parker but could not hit the target with only the keeper to beat.

Vultures captain Maponyane scored from the penalty spot in the 81st minute of the game after Tefu Mashamaite was adjudged to have pulled a United FC player’s shirt inside the area. Maponyane converted confidently from the spot to make for a high pressure final few minutes.

However, Amakhosi’s defence stood tall, and they will face either Platinum Stars or SuperSport United in the Final.

Dikwena and Matsatsantsa clash in Rustenburg on Wednesday.

Boring game by Chiefs, well done to United FC. They only need to work on their finishing. Not sure if our guys are tired or what.

Let's not celebrate kak performance makhosi we can do way better.

Khosi the boys where not motivated playing such a small team and the early goals didn't help either. But I still say RTG. Now we jst need 2 claim our 3 points from pta and we will be home dry

Good display of football by the United FC. Good way 2 improvise by Amakhosi. People always expect the transition play, but one needs 2 understand the opponent. United hold position and u can't counter then cz they r quick hence experience was the key 4 this game. To those who expert the same display of football in the final, damn I pity u. By now you guys should know Chiefs play a dynamic football unlike the other static fools.

Wow United FC..Makhosi I am really not happy about this win..in fact my played nonsense.. that's not how a big team play especially a home game. This thing of Khunes ball distribution is now predictable, teams disposes us easily..especially against Ajax. We need to start playing from the back and PLAY FOOT BALL not counter attacks. Where does this thing of long balls come from anyway. We cant make 5 passes without losing the ball..NO no no..we want to win playing beautiful football.

Possesion football is for cowards who are scared 2 loose the ball to the opposion cause they don't wanna loose by big margins. I mean what did united f.c get for their possesion cause the hardly troubled khune. Nxa stupid strategy
Guys please stop this foolishnes. United reached this stage because of this very same style, did you expect them to suddenly change to an unfamiliar style in the biggest match of their lives against the leading team in the premiership? And I suppose your teams have better strategies than this humble first division outfit, how far did their strategies take them in this cup? You seem to forget that they are a lower division team punching above its weight. It was a good campaign by them at the end of the day and they are doing well for the development if the game in the country.
