SuperSport United lose to ENPPI in CAF Confederation Cup

Posted: 4 May 2013 Time: 15:00

SuperSport United have crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 3-1 defeat to ENPPI of Egypt at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

United came into the game beaming with confidence after the goalless draw in the first leg in north Africa, but the visitors were a different proposition this time around, led by their marauding Ivorian striker Vincent de Fonye, who scored the brace.

However, it was Matsatsantsa who raced out of the blocks and they drew first blood through George Maluleka’s screamer on 10 minutes.

But rather than push on, United sat back on the lead and they paid the price on 37 minutes when De Fonye capitialised on a poor clearance from makeshift centre-back Edwin Gyimah to fire home from close range.

Three minutes later and the tie was turned on its head as the Ivorian netted his second – the home defence again backing off to allow him a composed, curling finish into the corner.

SuperSport came racing out of the blocks after the break, but the tie was effectively killed off when Omraw Ahmed buried a cut-back on 54 minutes.

Gavin Hunt went on all-out attack and brought on Kermit Erusmus and Thabiso Nkoana for Sameegh Doutie and George Maluleka, but they failed to have the desired impact as SuperSport continued their poor run in this competition and crashed out.

SuperSport XI: Williams, Nkausu, Kekana, Gyimah, Hlela, Mdluli, Maluleka, Doutie, Cale, Nyondo, Zuma

Bench: Fernandez, Meyiwa, Erasmus, Nkoana, Hartog, Nxumalo, Moloi

The Liverpool match should not disrupt our domestic schedulle at all, I think having that match during the on-season is a bit outside the spirit of football and more like DA-politically motive to market CT and should be rubbished! As for CAF, we don't need any plan B's pierats will not advance to the next stage the same with SSU, so dismiss all this rubbish talk and let us celebrate as schedulled on the 18th and 25th of May!

Gold the only high standard!!!
One in a bag, one to go(fall)..... I said it, I don't see this two SA teams to the next round! Another causality will soon follow!

And Gold is what we are reclaiming End of this season!!!

Those who wish Pirates to win need to know that although we face a mountain we do have history on our side in away ties in this tournament...

In 1995 against all odds we beat Asec Mimosa in Ivory Coast to win thhe first star.

Again in Lubumbashi although we were knocked out we drew against Tp Mazembe in Lubumbashi.

In 2010 when we played Gaborone Utd we didnt lose away

In 2011 we played Recriativo Di Libolo we again drew away

Now its 2013 we played Djabal and we beat them away from home as well as Zanaco we also beat them away.

So away from home Pirates play well in this tournament and we actually carry a lead going into this tie.

Therefore although we face an uphill task we do hold the trump cards hence we have every right to be optimistic and wish our boys all the best and as usual the whole country look towards them for inspiration.

Benitez has just stated a fact that true success is conquering in continental football and i believe this gospel has to be spread in South Africa.
I redpect your opinion, but take a look at European Champions League's country to country proximity, their reffering standard and monetary incentive.

Come to African Champions League's country to country proximity (travelling logistics) reffering and the the overall incentive, its a joke! I also believe that a continental representation boosts the National team in terms of experience, but as long as Caf still operates like this (refferees from the same region) I will not be hyped up, it is costly, and look at the fatigue and injuries Pirates have incured, for me I look at it as bragging than anything else, it is my opinion.

Some Pirates fans are hypocrites, they keep mentioning that they are double treble champions. How do u become a DTC? By winning 3 titles twice! Just because this time they are not competing for any trophies on offer in the PSL this season, they arte now calling the Nedbank cup and the Absa Primership useless bcz they compete in ACL! Bloody agents!

True de mentality of SA players s very weak, we need to improve in that area, how could Supersport hold dis team nil nil draw at their home and loose three one at their home ground, leaves a lot to be desired!

A lot of investment needs to be done on our players physocologically, mental strength its key in playing in Africa! Hope my team does well kusasa against the mighty TP Mazembe!!!

As pirates we have earned the right to see ourselves above the Psl.we won all that the PSL has to offer on 2 years.

So when we say the PSL is irrelevant we speak from the simple logic that winning the same old trophies when there r more accolades to win like the Caf league doesnt make sense to us.

Supersport was bad from the first minute, Gavin Hunt is losing it and I wish the SUfc management do let him go. I am starting to doubt his coaching ability, i think the reason that he won 3 successive leauges was purely because of players United had at the time.

How could he not sense danger while the game was 1- 0 in favour of united, that the middle of the park was dead, every second ball was finding one of the four unmarked players from ENPPI, in fact his tactics were so poor I have never seen United play that way. Knowing Hunt to be someone who doesn't tolerate any nonsense from his players I was suprised that he was so soft and it looked as if he wanted them to go out of the caf cup deliberately.

The only two players who tried to play football were Zuma and Gyimah, the third one having come on as a sub also tried to play football is Hartog. the rest were passengers

I think Williams is overrated the boy is no good, he's certainly not a good goalkeeper.
I hope Hunt loses to Platinum stars on wednesday on the Nedbank cup so that he can be professional this Gavin Hunt to treat all the cups equally, there was no reason to hold back and not to include certain players in the line up.

The less said about this game the better, most of the fans at the stadium were complaining about the way United played the game in their way out after the game. Especially considering that the opposition were of very low quality.

Super sports is really letting South Africa down how many times they went in the CAF competitions including champions league but they fail to progress any further they are sending wrong message that South African league is dominated by a weak team meaning they are all weak
