Mamelodi Sundowns beat Golden Arrows in the Nedbank Cup last 16

Posted: 15 March 2013 Time: 22:06

Mamelodi Sundowns survived three close shaves to run out 1-0 victors over a 10-man Golden Arrows side in a last 16 Nedbank Cup tie at Loftus stadium on Friday night.

The only goal of the match was scored by Anthony Laffor in the 81st minute. Arrows had Masonwabe Bovu red-carded in the second half.

Nyasha Mushekwi had the Brazilians’ first chance of the match in the 25th minute. The striker drove a low shot at goal but it was brilliantly kept out by Nkosingiphile Gumede.

Two minutes later Golden Arrows went very close to opening the scoring through Tshepo Liphoko. The midfielder hit a fierce shot from well outside the area and only a superb save from Sandilands kept the scores level. The goalkeeper tipped the ball onto the frame of the goal.

Gabuza once again rattled the post in the 43rd minute of the match. The forward broke down the left flank and hit a fierce shot which beat a helpless Sandilands but not the corner of the frame.

The half ended goalless with Golden Arrows dominating proceedings in Tshwane. Abafana Bes'thende were unlucky not to be a goal up on last year’s runners-up.

Arrows suffered a killer blow at the start of the second half as Bovu was given his marching orders in the 47th minute of the match for a second bookable offence.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Arrows produced the first chance of the second stanza. Gift Sithole found himself unmarked in the area from a free-kick but he only managed to find the crossbar with his powerful header in the 56th minute.

Substitute Laffor opened the scoring on the night in the 81st minute of the match. The Liberian midfielder controlled a Tebogo Langerman cross with his chest before striking a right footed shot into the back of the net.

The Brazilians managed to hold on to the lead and subsequently moved into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Mamelodi Sundows: Sandilands; Schut, Arendse, Mphahlele, Kekana, Shongwe, Julies (Modise 76’), Mushekwi, Langerman, Manqele, Henyekane (Laffor 45’)

Golden Arrows: Gumede; Zwane, Sithole, Musonda, Nene, Bovu, Khuboni, Bilankulu, Liphoko (Shange 73’), Ntuli (Smith 60’), Gabuza (Nguzana 87’

This is not the Sundowns I know, winning games with a mere 1 goal? What happened to the Sundowns that used to score +40 goals a season? Winning games with +3 goals?

We had the twelfth player on our side, the cross bar, thanks to it. I am not convinced we had creativity offensively, defensively we allow too much space on the wings, Sandilands is a question mark, the less said about Pitso's confused tactics the better. I did not see the difference in Jabulani and Hlompho's roles, they were like doing one thing, why duplicate the role.

Well done Downs, you were lucky to come out tops considering the number of times Sandilands was beaten only to be saves by the crossbar. UP THE BUCS...........

Can someone around Pta, specifically Mamelodi advise me here, Last time I saw HM Pitje Stadium, it was being upgraded prior to the World Cup. Is it finished or wat's really going on there? I mean Sundowns cant keep on taking their games to that Rugby Stadium whereas they have two township stadiums if not three when Odi Stadium is included and what is also happening to the stadium that was supposed to be built in Soshanguve. UP THE BUCS, UP THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CAMPAIGNERS.

I wasnt impress with the way we played...but I welcome the win thou. I thought Manqoba was gonna play his pack-the-bus and hope for counter game against us like he always does, but hey he took the game to Downs. We were luck on several occassiona. But ke this is a cup and im just glad we progressed. This was a totally different Down that made SSU sweat kwi 1st half last Sunday. Lets face it Madawana, we just cant score.
Kuboni is a brilliant player and Kekana had a touigh time against him...eish, I hope that useless Trott doesnt offer Arrows R10million to get Khuboni...eish laTrott kodwa yerrrr...

buy ja, its the cup, wether you win 24-0 or 1-0 by an own goal, you go through. But im still not happy with the perfomance guys, we can do better...

Thank you Dawana and that is really a concern, Imagine if Downs were playing at HM Pitje, they would know that its unacceptable to loose there, at home, they will have that feeling of belonging. I also pray that the boys makes the nation proud and you guys win the Nedbank cup so that you can take part in the Confederations Cup next year. Trust me for our National team to be up there with the best we need to participate in this continental tournaments. We all know that the money is not good and the conditions are also not good when you travel up there, but it’s all about competing against the best, that’s the only way you can prove that you are the best.
