Kaizer Chiefs beat Bidvest Wits in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 23 February 2013 Time: 22:07

Kaizer Chiefs progressed to the Nedbank Cup last 16 with a comprehensive 3-0 defeat of Bidvest Wits on Saturday evening.

With archrivals Orlando Pirates having suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Maluti FET College earlier in the day, Amakhosi were weary not to suffer a similar fate against another student outfit.

But there was to be no such issues as Siboniso Gaxa gave the hosts an early lead after a great through-ball by Siphiwe Tshabalala.

They made it two from a corner - Shabba again the provider as Morgan Gould headed home.

Chiefs though that they had taken the lead in the 14th minute when Tshabalala received a pass from the left flank and he crossed into the box for Kingston Nkhatha, and the striker tapped home unmarked in the box, but the officials described the move as offside.

In the 30th minute Tshabalala intelligently put Nkhatha through on goal, but the former Black Leopards striker illustrated poor technique as he shot wide with the Wits defence at his mercy.

Just seconds later at the other end, the Clever Boys were denied by the crossbar. Ryan Chapman rose the highest in the box to meet Mzikayise Mashaba’s cross from the left flank but the striker was unfortunate to see his effort come off the post with Itumeleng Khune beaten.

Chiefs took the lead in the 35th minute when Tshabalala’s defence-splitting pass was met by a clever run by Gaxa and the right-back firstly outmuscled Aaron Mokoena then put the ball through the legs of Wits keeper Ryan Harrison to make it 1-0 to Amakhosi.

Three minutes after the half time break Chiefs were unlucky not to have made it 2-0. Tshabalala sent in an in-swinging free kick from the right wing and Nkhatha was unfortunate not to score as his shot was blocked by his own teammate Eric Mathoho, and then Wits cleared the ball for a corner.

But from the resultant corner, Chiefs would fully take their second chance as Gould scored with a near post header to covert Tshabalala’s in-swinging corner kick make it 2-0 to Chiefs in the 49th minute.

Masango then sent the vocal Mpumalanga crowd into frenzy. The winger had only been on as a substitute for three minutes when Nkhatha’s volley was parried into his path and he headed home into an empty net in the 80th minute.

Wits: Harrison, Pule, Mokoena (Sibande 73’), Pattison, Nengomasha, Vilakazi, Isaacs (Langwe 82’), Jayiya (Mukamba 58’), Sweswe, Chapman, Mashaba

Chiefs: Khune, Gaxa, Gould, Mashamaite, Mathoho, Masilela, Baloyi, Katsande (Letsholonyane 71’), Tshabalala (Masango 77’), Nkhatha, Rusike (Parker 69’)

He he Shaba can't use his right foot............did u see the assist to Gaxa. I must say we were on top of Wits until the introduction of Parke, Letsolonyane and Masango. They kind of kill the transition aka countering the counter and Tempo of the game. Otherwise well done Khosi !!!!!!
