Nigeria progress to AFCON 2013 semifinals after beating Ivory Coast

Posted: 3 February 2013 Time: 18:59

Nigeria shocked tournament favourites Ivory Coast 2-1 to progress to the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals in Rustenburg.

The Super Eagles took a first half lead through Emmanuel Emenike just before the break, but the Ivorians levelled on 50 minutes through Cheick Tiote.

However, Sunday Mba netted the winner 12 minutes from time for a sensational victory.

Elephants coach Sabri Lamouchi made eight changes from the team that drew 2-2 with Algeria in their last match, and it showed as Nigeria got out of the blocks faster, with Victor Moses firing in a shot on 10 minutes which Boubacar Barry parried to safety.

Emenike fired another shot over the bar on 27 minutes before their dominance was finally rewarded just before the break – the striker slotting a great free-kick after Moses was brought down just outside the area.

The Ivorians looked much better after the break and were duly rewarded just five minutes in when they drew level through Tiote, who headed in Didier Drogba’s free-kick at the back-post.

The Elephants kept up the pressure, though a warning sign of the Nigerian danger should have been forthcoming when Aide Ideye’s close-range headers was well saved by Barry.

Yaya Toure was put straight through and looked certain to score, but the excellent Vincent Enyeama was equal to the task.

It proved a crucial save as Nigeria scored the decisive goal just 12 minutes before the end – Mba beating three defenders before his deflected shot left Barry with no chance.

Ivory Coast through everything forward and had a number of chances, but just could not get the ball into the back of the net as the Eagles held on for a famous win.

OH BABY EAGLES!
How you have stood your ground even in a strange ground. Your first fighter showed you|re die hard. But in sub-sequence fights you have learned how to kill where there is no help. Go on and get your training.
Now that you can, its two to go.

AS LONG AS A NIGERIAN IS WEARING GREEN WHITE GREEN THERE IS HOPE FOR FOR THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIAN.

Congratulations to the SUPER EAGLES for showing guts against the no1 ranked NATION in africa and a star studded team in Ivory Coast, pre-tournaments favourites are out and yet some of the clueless GORILLAS has the dedency to talk bad abt their country which did very well to get to the quarters...SA didnt play the qualifiers with 5 months for the coach to assemble the team; lowest ranked team in our group but still managed to move on to the next round, we are not world beaters but we did vry well to disappoint too many critics!!! Anyway NIGERIANS played very well and deserve to go through...

Absolutely stunning display by the super eagles, shades of the old Nigeria with the likes of Taribo West, Julius Agahoa and jay jay Okocha. No one gave them a chance, including me, but wow did they prove everyone wrong or did they prove everyone wrong, they were confident, dazzling and almost arrogant and bullish. Well done guys

Pedigree won this match. Congrats to the boys. But, we still need to revive our technical department. Please, Nigerians should ignore these South Africans. We don't operate on the same frequency with them.

Hehe I am so happy! It takes a lot of balls to drop Yobo and to have soo many homebased in your squad. I always believed in them.

Our problem is that we think Ethiopia and co. are all easy games.... The fact is that this games are not easy to play!!

GOOD JOB my Super Eagles!!

Ivory Coast were just too complacent. They never imagined that the boys from the land of Boko Haram would cause them any trouble.

Where are all those BIG MOUTH south africans who come here to insult Nigerians? WHERE ARE YOU NOW? Where are those that were already saying that Ivory Coast will beat Nigeria? This is a lesson for all the haters, football is played on the pitch, and not on paper or in people's mouths.
