Joel Mogorosi goal wins Telkom Knockout Final for Celtic

Posted: 1 December 2012 Time: 21:05

Bloemfontein Celtic are the 2012 Telkom Knockout champions after they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

CHECK OUT A GALLERY OF THE ACTION HERE!

Joel Mogorosi scored the only goal of the game just after the break – albeit in controversial fashion – to hand the Free Staters the trophy, and once again deny Teko Modise silverware.

Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens went with the attacking approach of Richard Henyekane and Eleazar Rodgers up front, but it was his midfielders who posed the biggest threat to Celtic early on.

Temba Zwane and Teko Modise both had shots on target from the edge of the area, with the latter’s requiring a fine diving save from Patrick Tignyemb.

However, it was the Free State team who came closest to the opener when Lennox Bacela was played through on goal after a defensive slip, only for Wayne Sandilands to save at his feet.

Henyekane and Zwane tested the keeper again, but the best chance of the half fell to Ruzaigh Gamildien on 30 minutes. A poor clearance dropped to him on the edge of the area but, after beating one defender, he dragged his shot inches wide of the upright.

It took just two minutes for Celtic to break the deadlock in the second half – and the goal came in controversial fashion.

Sandilands missed a cross from the right and the ball fell to Mogorosi, whose first-time header looked to have been cleared off the line by Clayton Daniels. The goal was awarded though, even though replays suggest the whole of the ball did not cross the line.

Four minutes later and Celtic almost doubled their lead when a lightning quick counter-attack saw the ball played to Gamildien, but his left-footed drive from the edge of the area went inches wide with the goalkeeper beaten.

The introduction of Anthony Laffor from the bench seemed to spark Sundowns into life, and they almost drew level from Modise’s long-range volley, which sailed just wide.

Laffor then played an excellent cross from the left which Tignyemb did well to pumch clear, before the Liberian went on a mazy run which saw him beat three defenders, but then shoot straight at the goalie.

Celtic almost made sure of the points in injury time, but Mogorosi’s shot came back off the upright. Nyasha Mushekwi then dragged Downs’ final shot wide as Celtic celebrated their first piece of silverware since 2005.

Now I declare that Neskeens have no idea of what he is doing. Julies and Zwane where not on the Line up since the beginning of TKO, now all of the sudden they start the final. I am so disappointed about the way my team lost.... However the players didn't show enough hunger as they really want this CUP. Well done to Siwelele they deserve to win at the end of the day.

I don't know who could see the line 'cause I could only see the posts which are thicker than the goalline so no-one can be sure if the ball crossed the line or not

Sundowns !!!!!! Balayekile ,they will be beaten until they stop being greedy and sign every player that Chiefs wants , where is that Khumalo boy from Swallows ? Where is Manqele now ? Where is Musheki ,just sitting on the bench .They were all taken on their way to Chiefs . Manqele Not even on the bench today . Shapa selesele . Fire Teko man . Is it true that Sundowns is talking to Ntate Motlanthe as a possible new Coach ? How do u leave Domingoes on the bench and allow Mkhulu uNyandora to watch the match in the field ?

Referees are human ,many times they made mistakes that benefitted Sundowns and i never heard noises that ,"hey mr ref gave us the game ". How many times did Suntowns win the league having won matches controvesially ? Afterall 80% of the ball had crossed the line , Mababize uHelen Zille abaphekelele to the high court to lay a charge against the ref.or just shut up , badlwe laba . Balayekile ,these greedy fellows who destroyed many players

Talking about the referee wont bring things back. Referee's decision has always bn final. Both teams wanted it very badly but Celtic came tops. It is an unfortunate thing to Sundowns to loose this long. They seem to have bn cursed. I see Mvela league for them.

I hate Sundowns more than any other team.Bucs are our rivals as Amakhosi but they are not all the time on our case when signing players but Sundowns hijack every player linked to Kaizer Chiefs.May be they believe they would be like Chiefs if they sign those players forgeting that its not only about players but management of the team counts a lot to the success of the team as well.
