Mamelodi Sundowns beat SuperSport United

Posted: 17 November 2012 Time: 22:13

Mamelodi Sundowns defied the pressure to book their spot in the 2012 Telkom Knockout Final after a sole strike by Eleazar Rodgers against SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday night.

Both teams came into the game as the two sleeping giants in the Premiership and they were in need of a place in the final to help boost their confidence.

SuperSport created all the early pressure, but it was a great counter-attacking move by Anthony Laffor which saw him assist in breaking the deadlock on the quarter mark.

Laffor supplied the ball into the box, which met Eleazar Rodgers, who controlled and turned on the ball before driving it into the back of the net, 1-0.

The scoreline nearly doubled ten minutes later, when Hlompho Kekana forced Ronwen Williams to make an unforeseen save after he headed the ball back to the keeper only for it to nearly go in at the far post.

The half saw both sides pushing forward, but neither could really create anything significant in front of goal.

Gavin Hunt opted to make a change when he put on Nathan Paulse and Franklin Cale in place of Mor Diouf and Moffat Mdluli at the start of the second half.

Paulse kept Sandilands on his toes when he fired in a low shot towards goal, but the keeper pulled off a diving save, in the 65th minute, to pull the ball away from Sibusiso Zuma’s feet.

Cale tried to turn in a free-kick, with just 15 minutes to go, but after doing well to work the ball through the wall, it was deflected out by Paulse.

The presence of Cale in the SuperSport line-up spurred the squad on as they tried to find a late equalizer, but they were denied it after their penalty appeal was waved away in the 86th minute.

The last time I saw this kind of resilience was when sundowns beat SSU with NÝandoro scoring the third goal and we won the league that season. I'm glad we fought to the last whistle. But I still don't trust sundowns. One win and next game they shame you again! Let's win our remaining games this calendar year and move from the foot of the log, then I will start talking. With Barca, A.rsenal, Dortmund and Downs winning, and Man u losing, it was a perfect weekend. And Mr editor get your facts right. Mor Diouf played the whole game.

I don't care who wins this cup. My wishes were answered in the most dramatic fashion when Chibuku FC aka Lusaka Pirates were booted out of the cup in the most cruel manner imaginable. Leading 3 - 1 in the 89th minute who would have thought that the dogs wouldn't proceed to the semi's ? God is good all the time.

Congrats to Marabastad FC for reaching the final. The Telkom Cup is your only chance to win some silverware this season. Just look at the log and weep. The Mighty Amakhosi's Operation Restore Order is in full swing.

Siwelele sa Masele!!! also known as 'The Treble Dream Assasins'...Gameldine, Mogorosi, Bacela nd RVP Mabena these guys kill treble dreams 4 fun, nd unfortunately Sundowns @ da moment can still win the treble so Bloem Celtic will never let them win this Cup- "we h8 treble wet dreams that's why we always destroy them"- said RVP Mabena

The TDA(Treble Dream Assasins) will be without their main defensive striker RVP Mabena, so we myt not see the fire-works we saw against Pirates, bt the remaining Assasins will surely do the job!

Good Morning Kickoff bloggers...enjoy yo sunday, #mokgotsiWaMasele

In hindsight I want to change my earlier statement where i said I don't care who wins this cup. I think Celtic must win it. Why ? Because they did the Mzansi a very big favour when they destroyed Lusaka Pirates in the most cruel manner imaginable.

Imagine if Lusaka Pirates had won that match. Shoooooooo ! The dagga smokers would have gone on and on about how they were going to win another (fake) Trebble as if they are sangomas who can see into the future.

I wish Celtic all the best. May the win their match today and go on to destroy Marabastad FC on the finals.
