Impressive Bafana down Angola in 2013 AFCON

Posted: 23 January 2013 Time: 17:56

South Africa finally produced a performance worth celebrating as they beat Angola 2-0 in Durban in their second match of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

After the dismal effort against Cape Verde, Bafana Bafana looked a different side as goals from Siyabonga Sangweni and Lehlohonolo Majoro secured the vital three points.

The attacking line-up selected by Gordon Igesund paid dividends as the hosts – bar an early shot from Mateus which Itumeleng Khune tipped round the post – dominated the first half.

And after a hopeful early effort from Katlego Mphela, the Bafana's first real chance fell to an unmarked Sangweni, who completely missed Thuso Phala’s curling free-kick into the area.

Dean Furman was proving a handful for the Angolans with his ball-winning abilities, and one such tackle saw him get up immediately and try and chip goalkeeper Lama, but the effort landed on the roof of the net.

Tokelo Rantie was also looking sharp and his partnership with Mphela yielded a few half-chances, but none that troubled Lama.

However, on 30 minutes the keeper did have a job to do – to pick the ball out the back of the net.

Bernard Parker’s free-kick was not cleared by the Angolan defence, allowing Sangweni to sneak round the back and volley across the face of goal and into the back of the net.

It was no more than Bafana deserved for some enterprising play which was lacking against Cape Verde, though Mateus had a chance late in the half when the ball dropped to him in the box, but his shot was rushed and way over.

Angola came out with more fire in the second half and almost levelled six minutes in when the impressive Mateus found Guilherme Afonso, whose snap-shot looked to be going in before Khune got down well to save.

Three minutes later and Furman was inches away from his first ever international goal, but for a fine tip around the post by Lama.

However, the keeper had no answer on 62 minutes as Bafana scored their second goal. Substitute Majoro, with his first touch of the game, ran onto a long ball from Reneilwe Letsholonyane and beat one defender before slotting through the goalie’s legs.

Mateus hit a shot straight at Khune shortly afterwards, but it was Bafana who came closest to adding to their tally when Mphela’s cross found Majoro’s, whose snap-shot went narrowly wide.

Angola came into the game more in the final 10 minutes but, a Manucho header which Khune saved aside, were unable to really trouble the Bafana backline.

In fact, Majoro came close to adding to a third in injury-time when he ran onto a long-ball and chipped the goalie, but the ball went well wide when he should have done much better.

Now Igasende is coming to senses. Please hold on boys, Morocco and Cape Verde did you abig favour. We will support you all the way as long as u know you representing 50million citizens. Thumbs up. Please do not play for a draw on Sunday, I know SA soccer coaches are capable of advising you such.

South Africa siyabangena. Dean Furman is marvell to watch.................

It took a defender to show strikers how the ball is put in the back of the net. Sangweni (as the eldest in the team) led by example. He should be praised for unsettling Angola with that goal. Ah, Yeye lost most of the balls even though the coach is protecting him by saying he played well. Given more time, Manyisa can help Bafana a lot.

Ja neh, Igasende is really feeling the pressure now neh? Bheka nje, even inkwethu is "showering and towering\" over his shoulders.

But like in the words of the villains in Scooby Doo, "My plan to conquer Africa would've became a reality if it weren't for those medling Zebras in my team.\"

Prophecy? South Africa 0-2 Angola! The land of the Land Mines aka Angola will blow this weak team aside! This game is just a formality for Angola; no 2 cents doubt about it. Gordon, forget what the President said to you and your team that you should "ignore your critics.\" Critics are there for a reason and when we give critique, it's not because we want to be negative about things through freedom of expreission, but it's also a way of us showing you to do right from wrong.

You're an old hog in the game of football and you don't me or anyone to remind you that being coach of a national team is more difficult than being the president of the State. I will say though that don't listen to what Richard McGuire said, but I'll tell you this, listen to the masses and their critiques and see some sense into what we're saying and apply it. That way if you fail, we fail as a nation.

But unfortunately it's now a case of too little too late. You've bombed out of this tournament and quite frankly there's no one else to blame but you coach. It's sad as for the first time in history, the majority of South Africans want Bafana to fail and rightfully so. You can't blame us. No sane person wants to be associated with failure and failure to live up to promises and expectations. If the law of 'Breach of Promise' was applicable in SA, we would've sued the pants off SAFA for all the broken promises we've had to endure for over a decade now. Sibadala manje saze sazala kodwa alukho ushintsho. Sies...

This is dedicated to those who still have "hope\" in this useless squad...
