South Africa and Cape Verde Islands draw at Soccer City

Posted: 19 January 2013 Time: 17:29

The opening match of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations between South Africa and Cape Verde Islands at Soccer City was one to forget as it finished in a goalless draw.

In was a game the capacity crowd would want to forget as soon as possible as it lacked any quality, with neither side being able to string together meaningful passes or create much in terms of scoring chances.

The hosts had an early chance to take the lead – Thuso Phala won a free-kick on the right and Siphiwe Tshabalala whipped in a curling effort, but Bernard Parker could not steer his near-post header on target.

On 13 minutes there was another chance for Bafana when they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area, but Shabba’s shot was a tame one and went straight into the arms of goalkeeper Vozinha.

Then the half’s best chance. South Africa’s shaky defence was found out prior to the tournament, and it showed no signs of improvement when Babanco’s through-ball put Platini one-on-one with Itumeleng Khune, but he dragged his shot woefully wide.

Nerves were showing on both sides and chances were few and far between as a result of misplaced passes and the wet conditions, but Cape Verde had one more opportunity towards the end of the half after Bafana failed to deal with a corner, but Mendes fired over from a tight angle.

Lerato Chabangu came on for Kagisho Dikgacoi at the start of the second half, and he immediately tried to make an impact with an audacious bicycle kick, but the connection was poor.

Then, on 58 minutes, the closest Bafana came to a goal. Lehlohonolo Majoro ran onto a long ball and cut inside to feed Parker. The ball was taken off his feet but fell to Tshabalala, but his shot was bravely saved by the keeper.

The game then descended into a scrap of note as both teams showed a lack of quality and ability to adapt to the wet conditions, but Cape Verde did have one more good opportunity with 15 minutes to go. Some more poor defending allowed Heldon with a diving header, but Khune managed to tip the ball around the corner.

Thabo Matlaba had one last effort towards the end of the match when he was teed up by Chabangu, but it was deflected wide. From the resulting corner, Khumalo headed over – a great chance missed yet again.

I don't understand why players who play overseas at the highest level are selected & then benched. Its obvious Ingasende selected unfit players and tried and tested failed players at the expense of deserving players. Ingasende now did show us his hand in a bigger picture. Here we are playing that kak kaizer chimp system of kicking the ball upfront and running like mad headless chicken.....no wonder he selected so many cows from that failure of a team. The draw was painfull for me as I was in the wet cold stadium giving these things my support

Shabba is so useless, he must be bribing Ingasende with fish & chips to even b selected to the squad let alone playing. Phala, what a useless player. Majoro can't even trap the ball.....the less said about KG & yeye The better. Parker once more prooved beyond reasonable doubt why he is a cow of note. The much hated Khumalo is being exposed by the midfield. Anele had a bad day. Khune & Thabo had a much better game.

Egypt won AFCON 7 times with Al Ahgly. Spain Are the current champs with Barcelona and only SA wants to win with the "most supported" team rather than the best team at the moment.

Where is pirates, chiefs and sundowns youth development, no where, then we say fire the coach, why he is working with bellow par players, our players are not old enough, look at all the top international teams, holland, brasil, Spain, Portugal, Belgium , Germany and watch this space see what England's doing with their development. These second-rate lovers of mediocrity supporters....

Not even 1 of them can give us a half-way decent analysis of the game....

All we are reading is "...bafana dark of blue..." or "...sub this player for that player..."

Where is the content...? Or has Bafana's DNA transfused into the supporters as well...

Can atleast one Bafana supporter step it up tu....

What were you expecting guys from yesterday"s game? How can Kaizer Chiefs represent our country at AFCON and win while they have not win anything for a very long time here at home? The secret that GI was talking about was majoro...ha ha ha hs ha ha....i myself did not thought majoro will play ahead of rantie and mphela. GI play yeye, shabba, serero, phala, mphela, rantie. Back 4 is still fine.

I think I warned you to stop biting the finger that fed you. You insulted Nigeria so badly that nemesis start talking it's toll on your team on that day. Anyway I wish you goodluck so that we won't be having empty stadiums ...that's my own worries.Pls you don't have a team. Stop encouraging yourselves.
